Turtle "friends"

masseyjake Feb 13, 2005 09:13 PM

I have owned Harvey (RES) for about 10 years now. He lives in a 55 gallon aquarium. He had never had any housemates, except for the 10 fish that I buy once a month, that rarely last more than a week. (They eventually become snacks)

Currently I am building an enclosure that with extend beyond the top of the tank so that Harvey will have a greater area to bask and explore.
Here is my question.
I am tempted to make the basking area a terrarium-like environment and put some small (quick) reptiles within the enclosure. Like a few anoles or a gecko.
The basking enclosure will be large and will provide enough space for the reptiles to climb out of Harvey's reach.
Has anyone ever tried this?
Any experiences with RES's having friends of different species that did not become snacks?

There are a couple of reasons why you should not attempt this.
1st it is unneccessary for you turtle to have a large land area to "explore" in. An area with a basking lamp that the animal can climb up on and bask is all that is needed. Sliders are aquatic by nature and only come ashore for the purpose of basking or for the females to find a nesting site. The Females are the only ones who may be inclined to move around alot on land and ONLY for the purpose of nesting.

2nd the other lizards, frogs whatever would be in peril. The lizards would likely fall into the water and if they can't haul themselves out they would drown. Any frogs or lizards would both be in peril if they were in the water because the turtle would view them as a food item.

While this is a nice idea it really is not a very advisable or practical thing to do.
