Wild caught or CBB?

buffysmom Feb 13, 2005 11:37 PM

I'm interested in getting a toad & am looking into different species (not FBT, though). Are most toads that I'll find for sale (like the cane/marine toad) going to be wild caught?

The unfortunate reality is that most amphibians in the pet trade are wild-caught. This is especially true for toads. There are many reasons for this including the large amount of offspring most toads have, the time it takes to care for them, the small amount of money most sell for compared to other reptiles and amphibians and, in some situations, we just don't know exactly what to do to get the toads to breed. Bufo marinus is an invasive species in Florida and other places, and collection from those areas can supply the pet trade. There is no need to breed cane toads in captivity. Keep your eyes open though, every now and then an oddball group of captive-bred toads will show up,
