Funny feeding story

cable2001 Feb 14, 2005 08:48 AM

As I have mentioned before, my two collards have different eating habits. Amon is aggressive and usually eats first. Amaunnete is both smaller and more laid back. They're both still pretty small, and usually only eat no more than two crickets apiece. Three max. Any more, and they just watch them run.

Yesterday, I saw them both sitting on their rock pile looking hungry. I tossed a cricket into the middle of the cage, and the race was one. They both got there about the same time, but Amon won the struggle. In the process, he scared Amaunette who ran up the back wall. I tossed in a second cricket, and Amon wolfed it down as well. I figured that would keep him happy so Amaunette could eat.

I tossed in another one, and Amon got that one as well. Ok, so I figured three and he's done. I tossed in another, and Amaunette nailed that one. I dropped another one right in front of her, but Amon darted in and stole it! So, I tossed in yet another. This one walked around in front of Amaunette and she just looked at it. It then made it to the rocks, and both lizards climbed back up to bask. After a minute or so, the cricket decided to explore, and Amon ate that one as well!

So, now the score is:

Amon 5
Amaunette 1
Crickets 0

Since Amaunette had ignored the one I dropped right in front of her, I figured she was done. Amon had eaten almost twice what he usually does, so I went on with my day.

Now, as I've said before, Amaunette is lazy and usually gets up last and goest to bed first. Well, around 8 o'clock I noticed that she was sitting in the middle of the cage looking at me like, "pssst... hey buddy.... yeah, you.... got a cricket on ya?"

Amon had gone to bed, so I tossed in a cricket, and she scarfed it down and just sat there. So, I gave her another. And another. After the third one, she ran up to bask, so was full.

Long story, but I just thought it was funny. They were both so out of character yesterday. Maybe they sense spring is coming and my feeding bill is about to skyrocket???

Wow, it's interesting to hear how a pair will interact.

Thanks for taking the time to tell us.

I have observed some who even if they seem full will grab the other guys cricket just so HE can't have it.

I also seem some who will snub his nose at a superworm crawling by, only to make a mad dash to grab it from anothers mouth who walked up to eat it.

WEIRD, but people do it also. EVERYONE always seems to want that LAST peice of chocolate cake for themselves, hehehehehehe

i thought i replied to this post earlier and i don't think it intentionally had anything bad in it to be deleted so maybe i never hit the post button
anyway i said just make sure there isn't agression or intimidation going on with them, like he won't ever let her eat
i also said that last summer my lizards were eating 8-12 crickets daily, except the girls when they were about to burst with eggs and that ivan and walter were already up to that amount now, so you could very well be buying lots of crickets soon

That's definitely a legitimate concern. That's why I watch carefully to make sure they both eat. There's actually been times when Amaunette eats and Amon doesn't. I think it is more mood than anything else. Amon eats first, but Amaunette usually eats.
