my buddy Terry take all the hits. I had free time and unlike so many on this forum I felt a bit sarcastic. May the herp gods forgive me.
I just couldn't help myself.

yankeedoodle Jul 07, 2003 06:47 PM

Sarcasm? Where? Actually I thought Terry handled himself quite well. Very witty...for a Yank.

BILLY Jul 07, 2003 09:15 PM

That is cool Del!
I guess that I myself am not a hybrid. My parents were both from Indiana, but I have lived in TX all my life. Does that make me a Yank due to my family's bloodline? Or am I strictly a Southerner due to my living quarters over the past 29 years?

Hey Billy, that makes you a "dang Yankee." I'm sure you know the difference between a "Yankee" and a "Dang Yankee." LMAO.

When I was growing up, we thought anyone from anywhere north of Picayune, Mississippi was a Yankee.

KJUN Jul 08, 2003 07:51 AM

>>When I was growing up, we thought anyone from anywhere north of Picayune, Mississippi was a Yankee.

In my mind, anything west of Port Arthur, east of Slidell, or north of U.S. Highway 90 was Yankeeville. The only person to ever consider where I grew up to be Yankeeville was a girl from Pilottown, Louisiana. I guess she considered anyone that could use a truck to get to the town they lived in must be a Yankee....lol. Actually, I've lived most of my life in houses that were accessible by vehicle.

oldherper Jul 08, 2003 09:50 AM

Yeah, I grew up in South Louisiana. We started out in Houma and Morgan City because my dad worked out in the Terrebonne Bay and Atchafalaya Bay area. Then we moved to Gretna, then to B.R., then back to Metairie all by the time I was 5. Then we moved to Slidell and I stayed there until I joined the Army in 1970. Most of my old true full Cajun relatives have died off now. I don't know if I still have anyone living in the Manchac or Atchafalaya anymore. I doubt it....maybe some distant relatives, but I don't know who they are. When I was a teenager, I spent a WHOLE lot of time stomping around Honey Island Swamp.

KJUN Jul 08, 2003 10:21 AM

Man, Honey Island Swamp sure is a beautiful place. Anyone who doesn't get to go there and get their feet muddy at least once are missing out, aren't they? I bet it isn't as nice as it was pre-1970, but it is still nice.

I grew up in Morgan City, Berwick, Amelia, Gibson, Patterson, etc. Basically, I lived within a few miles of Morgan City until I went away to college in the 90's. Great places to grow up. The Atchafalaya Delta will always own my heart. Mix in some Heberts, Pisanis, Sons, Aucoins, LaCostes, and Rulfs and you've got the best place in the world!

Heck, I was born and bred in the "real" South and KJ still considers me a yanke because of elevation, lol.

As far as Billy being a dang yank or texan or ? The way I see it, Texas is part of the south, but they have always been Texas period. It is like you enter a whole other country when you go there. I have rarely seen a state with as much pride as Texas.

Hek, to me anything north of Tennessee, Virginia, and Arkansas is Yankeeville, anything west of Texas and Arkansas is, well, just states.

just ribbing everyone,

LOL, PA is definitely Yank territory, born and raised here. I did go to CO for a while thinking of moving, but never made it permanently, lol, back to my tiny town in PA. Hopefully we don't see anyone crying over these posts...since they are on a "public forum"...hahaha, maybe I should privately e-mail all of you...LOL, actually i'm really getting a kick out of hearing the South and North argue, I want to hear from Terry soon though! Have a good one all of you, and please keep up the good pokes, h*ll, throw a few at me if you want to, i'm feeling left out here, hahaha.
Have a good one,

waiting for my new birth certificate, drivers license, etc to be completed. LOL I had take new pictures the other day. My wife read the thread the other day and said she didn't think California was a state back then. Some Texans still hold to the Annexation thing and say Texas is not technically part of the US. I don't know if that's only a few or what. I'm apathetic so I probably don't care anyway. LOL. How's the sonoran eggs doing Gregg? Is the bairds still acting different?

>>waiting for my new birth certificate, drivers license, etc to be completed. LOL I had take new pictures the other day. My wife read the thread the other day and said she didn't think California was a state back then.

The US had just taken California from Mexico. Many of the "new Americans" who had been Mexicans just a very short period ago were watching the civil war VERY closely. If CA weren't as apathetic as they were (lol), they might have split off at the same time and either rejoined Mexico or becaome their own country, too. Things seemed to fizzel out with that threat, but I truly believe that CA would have split off from the US immediately following the ending of the war with the south as victorous if that were to have occured. Besides, it would have been MUCH harder to send lots of troups all the way to California than just down south to Virginia.

By the way, Terry, tell your wife that California was admitted into the Union on September 9, 1850.

>> Some Texans still hold to the Annexation thing and say Texas is not technically part of the US.

Texas can legally succeed based on their original agreement with the US government, but I think that contract became null and void when the US forced them back into the union by force after they DID try to leave. (See? The US government lied to the "white" government just like they did to the Indian "governments." Heck, Texas wasn't a state long enough to even see what it was like before they tried to leave again. That's a Texan for you!

to do that now, i guess there's a happy 4th even for ya...LOl, having to change your identity due to a ("public", have to remember that from now on, lol, forum). Anyways, on to other things now i guess.
The Sonoran eggs are looking great, all 10 of them. The Cape eggs are still doing well, few have developed mold, but still look ok. I am having a heck of a time finding female Capes, please keep me in mind for them, that albino male is ready to go again next year with a few more ladies, lol. The bairdi are still acting p*ssy, but did eat one hopper the other night, so who knows. I am still putting them and the trans pecos together. Male TP refused food again and the picky female is still pounding down whatever i throw her, so maybe some late eggs this year for me...which is fine with me. I need to spread some of these babies out. Will del have any deppei deppei this year? I forgot what you told me, sorry...losing my mind as usual, it's late here in the North East. Well, i'll talk to you all later! Have a good one everyone.

I would, Gregg, but I don't talk to people from THAT far north....lol. Besides, I haven't forgotten what y'all did to Pickett's men on a hill in a small town in PA for no good reason at all. Cheaters.

If Lee would have just listened to Longstreet..... Terry and Camby, step back now. They are about to get me started on THAT soapbox.....lol.
KJ

gofer Jul 08, 2003 09:49 PM

LOL, so i'm too far north eh...well, i guess that will spare me some pokes from you darn southerners...maybe, lol. Yeah, i guess we just go off sometimes for no reason, lol, best not to make fun of PA..hahaha. I'm waiting now for Terry and Camby to get you started and fire that soapbox up in regards to Lee not listening. I was actually married and visited a hotel/mansion in Charleston, SC last November where Lee and his men were stationed for a while. Charleston is a great place to visit, i learned a lot about the south while being there...but don't know if i'm heading back down that way since hearing all of you southerners...LOL...have a good one KJ, and thanks for sparing me and my home state...for now at least.

Yeah, but you can't forget the Pichons, Facianes, Galatas's, and Landrys, either for St. Tammany Parish.

Honey Island Swamp was a paradise back then for a kid that loved herps (especially Cottonmouths).

Then there was the Snake Farm (at least that's what we called it) in LaPlace and the place like a little roadside zoo on HiWay 190 outside of Slidell (like you were heading out to the Rigolets) next to the White Kitchen Restaurant. After I grew up and started getting shipments of snakes from Southeast Asia and other places, I can tell you some stories about the guy that ran that little roadside zoo and his encounters with the U.S.F.W. Service agent that used to meet me at the N.O. Airport to check my shipments in. There was no love lost between those two. She was based in Slidell.
