Microchips ----> anyone?

toshamc Feb 14, 2005 11:47 AM

My Typical Stupid Question:

Microchips:

Can you use them on snakes?

Does anyone use them?

Pros/Cons (for breeders and buyers)?

Any other feedback?

Thanks

I don't see why not. In fact it's probably a good ideal, especially with the high end morphs.

correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they do use them for the high end morphs. Can't tell ya who right off hand, but I'm sure they're being used.

I have two with the Avid chips injected into them.
You would never know it either, unless i told you,or you have the scanner needed to get the number.
Eventually i will get around to the rest of them.

I believe its a 35 dollar option on the animal. You can actually order them through some vet clinics for around 12 bucks a piece if you buy them in packages (I think around 5-10 per pack) Its definetely a good way to help secure an investment.

I mean...does each microchipped animal get a photo ID with microchip number? And how do you go about "reading" the microchip number in the future? Do you "scan" the animal?

Curious,
Chris

I believe he uses PIT tags (Passive Induction Transponder) It's a small capsule about the size of a grain of rice that has a unique numbered signature to it. This is injected into the animals body cavity with a special tool which is like giving them a shot with a large diameter needle. You need to read it with a special reader. Think of the tags as kind of an injectable bar code. The tags themselves are pretty cheap when you buy them in bulk, The readers however are quite pricey.

All of our animals are chipped. We have been doing it for about 15 years. Not only is it a great theft deterrent, but it is also ideal when you have a colony of similar looking snakes like rainbow boas .. you can scan the breeding pair and immediately tell who is breeding. We did an article years ago for Reptile & Amphibian Magazine on the process. It is online at the link below.

That is an awesome idea.. If my collection ever reaches a fairly large size I may look into doing that for breeding tracking purposes.
