croc monitor

nydon Feb 14, 2005 01:04 PM

this female was skinny when i got her but i beefed her up on by supplementing her diet with dog food! She has given me eggs but i had no male for her at the time.

Looks Great

Was it the dog food that got her going? I believe you said you used other things in the diet.

is that her stool to the right of her? The runny mess on the floor?

None the less she looks fine.

no, i was just being a sarcastic butt. Although i feel with monitors that need some additional weight, that rodents just don't get me fast enough results so i do add more supplement to their diet. dog food seems to put on weight fast as well as eel and snails but i always mix it up regardless. as far as their stools go, different foods do loosen their stools which in the case of a constipated animal, that is a good thing. The worst is snails. i first started feeding snail to my blue tongues and found it great for putting on weight and for reluctant feeders. I produce a lot of blue tongues (including some great kei island, tanimbars and some unusual melanistic and white/silvers). The snails do not seem to give the blue tongues runny stools but it can be quite messy for the monitors. Although most of them really like it and it is variety for them, i limit the snails to them simply because of the mess it makes.

I was wondering if you were serious or not about the dog food, I figured it was a shameless stab.

I breed blue tongues myself, I also happen to work with kei islands.

Here are some of my croc pics, chowing on their favorite food. Both c/b and raised from babies. (it's not dog food though sorry)

No need to apologize for feeding what you are comfortable with. I did not come to this site to force my ways on others, just to interact, keep abreast of what others are doing and learn new things. If you ever want to email some pics of your Kei's i would love to see them. Although i am producing gigas and scincinoides (i know i screwed that up), i just set my tanimbars and kei's up this year. They are doing great though and i have high hopes for them. 2 of them are almost completely white with some very light pink and lavender sides that come out at night but that does not show up on the pictures. They are truly awesome and i am sure the little bit of dark speckling on the back will completely disappear in a few more sheds.

good looking croc!

Thanks I like my crocs too.

I will try and get some pictures together of my bluetongues, adults and babies. With the kei islands and tanimbars I have noticed they change colors. Especially with heat or at night.

Have some that turn pale white, some yellow, some get real dark, one is a mix and looks pied at night.

Heres some of my crocs.

I hope you enjoy the pics. The second, fourth and fifth picture were of Crocs hatched here. Also, why don't you use substrate?? FR

nice looking monitors. I do use substrate in most of my cages but that cage was a new one that i designed for quarintine. It is 3 tiered and each water container is set in flush to the flooring and plumbed with pvc so i can flush and clean the containers in a matter of seconds to allow for easy and fast cleaning whenever necessary. that picture was actually pulled from my cd and is a little older picture as shortly after constructing the cage i realized the plyboard was not going to cut it for hygiene. It is now floored with linoleom which allows me to check stool consistancy and do fecals easily and can easily be cleaned with dilute chlorine water regularly to prevent hidden critters which normal substrate will do.
