Use a lamp dimmer to contol the heat and you will be fine. Without temperature control, you can and will overheat. If you do not use a dimmer, at least raise the box above the heat pad (i.e. with wood strips) enough to avoid overheating.
Ball pythons need ample heat but do not like a hot spot in a cold cage. You must make sure the air temp in the rest of the cage is decent, say above 72 degrees.
I've done it, with no problems at all. Use a rheostat to be safe. You can also buy those little rubber feet for furniture protection, to raise the box up so it's not resting directly on the floor and squishing the pad--or you can slide a human heating pad under with this arrangement.
