i was told by douglas dix (the deer fern farms page) that leafy greens should make up at least 50% of their diet. things like dandelion greens, mustard greens, bok choy, escarole, endive, etc.. i also feed them squash and limited peas and a mix of dried lentils, barley, carrots and a whole bunch of other stuff. my guys are really picky so it is hard for me to get them to eat different things

I follow Doug's recommendations also. My uro is very picky so he never eats "leafy" greens. I talked to Doug about this about a month ago and he gave me a tip on dandelion greens. He said the small ones in spring are best, especially before the plant has flowered. Once they flower, the greens become bitter and the uros typically don't like the bitter taste. Now dandelion flowers, that's a totally different thing! My guy loves 'em ! Check out the Deer Fern Farms link below for suppliments as well as the tortoise diet. I just got 3 lbs from Doug and it is working great. Just soak a pellet in warm water and mix it in some warmed green peas. Lightly dust with Miner-All and Uromastyx Dust and you're good to go.

up until recently helga barely ever ate greens. like i had to only give her peas a couple times a week so she would be "forced" to eat the greens. if i can find dandelion greens she is usually willing to eat those. however one day i gave her bok choy (which i have tried before in the past) and she went crazy. she loves it now and will actually eat it out of my hand with vigor. however it will be interesting to see if she keeps it up because she may just be trying to increase her water intake. she is getting ready to peel, her head just turned white.

You can make fresh food available to them every day. Also, if you haven't already done so, you should go to the "care sheets" link at the top of this page and click to the one for uromastyx. There you'll find a whole mess of great websites which will answer your questions far more thoroughly than any of us can in one little post. We can send you in the right direction, but your best bet will be to read as many good care sheets as you can find.
