Best type of water for (Green) Anoles?

SharkKing Feb 14, 2005 09:52 PM

What would be the best type of water for drinking and misting in general for Green Anoles? I'm currently using bottled store brand "Spring" water. Is that okay? My local water is chlorinated and I doubt that's good for anyone much less herps.

Is "Distilled" water okay for Green Anoles? I undertand "Distilled" water is put thru some sort of steaming process and as a result loses essential vitamins and minerals so I would never use it for any animal, but I really don't know the correct answer, so I'm asking.

What about the water enhancements that many reptile supply websites/companies advertise? Are they any good? Are they essential is some/any way to maintain or enhance a lizard's health and well-being? I *assume* they are some sort of vitamin/mineral additive(s). Am I correct in making that assumption? Is there anything to that claim, IYMHO, of course?

As far as Green Anoles not liking to drink from a water bowl in the bottom of their habitat, I have found that not to be true with my Green Anole. He comes down and drinks like a fish right out of the water bowl (usually in the morning). I do mist the tank as well though, too, for humidity maintainance in the tank.
Peace.

Water is for hydration only. Vitamins and minerals come from properly fed feeder insects and supplements. Pet store water is only trying to milk your money. The best thing to use is "drinking water" in the gallon jugs. I go for anything that is purified by reverse osmosis. If I can't find that, distilled water is fine. The drinking water leaves the least water marks on the glass.

Torey, I think there *may be" trace elements(minerals) and perhaps even trace vitamins in water. After all, life AFAWK originated in water, the sea.
I think maybe you misunderstood my post. Perhaps I wasn't very clear. I didn't mean actual pet store water, but some type(s) of additives that are sold in local pet stores and from Reptile supply stores which they claim you can add to the water that you get elsewhere and these additives supposedly add vitamins and minerals to the water you provide your Rep(s) to improve their health and well-being.
I myself do buy gallon jugs of store brand "Spring" water in my local supermarket which I use both for myself and for my Green Anole. Peace.

Use either distilled or filtered water to eliminate hard water spots. Since you can't use ammonia-based glass cleaners, they can be difficult to remove. Any "water supplements" would defeat the purpose of using distilled or filtered water since they would almost certainly add calcium to the water. If you are worried about nutrients, dust the crickets you feed to your Anoles once a week with a calcium supplement.

Perhaps I did misunderstand the *focus* of your post, but there is still no point to the pet store additives, IMO. It's just junk to sell you so they can get their hands on your money.

Torey,

I couldn't agree more with your conclusion on the whole matter! But hey, someone's got to spread honest Herp/Anole information around and why not us, and why not here? Eh? I *do* appreciate your feedback. It's just what I need to try to get up to speed on keeping Herps (Green Anole(s) presently) in captivity (successfully and rewardingly). Peace.

"He comes down and drinks like a fish right out of the water bowl (usually in the morning)."

Unusual but not unheard of. People generally say "most" anoles will not drink from standing water. It's true, "most" won't.

So I've read. Mine does though. Maybe he'd be a boozer if he access to some "Jack"? THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN HERE! Peace.
