weird frog behavior

antaine Feb 14, 2005 10:10 PM

i have an eastern green frog. He is in a 10 gal tank that is half full of water. it is filtered, oxygenated and furnished with numerous plastic plants, two "floating islands" anchored to the sides and little plastic caves.

he shares the tank with a leopard frog, and an african clawed frog as well as four snails. all the frogs and two of the snails are the same size. the green and leopard frog are fed 5-7 small crickets once a week.

so...the behavior...i frequently find him swimming a backstroke or laying on his back on one of the islands. he seems to really struggle to get around. When he swims, he moves both of his back legs, but not together...he moves one at a time like the way we walk, and so his swimming (when he's upright) is very awkard.

Tonight, i sat him in my hand, like it was a chair, so i could look at his hind legs. on his right thigh i found a lump, and when i touched it, applying gentle pressure i felt a creaking.

does this sound like a broken or dislocated leg? could it be cancer or some kind of disease?

he didn't react sharply like he was in pain when i touched it, but then again, i wasn't trying to hurt him. is a dislocated hip or broken leg more likely? I imagine that a vet couldn't put a cast on him, so if it's broken is there anything i'm supposed to do but let it heal on its own? he still uses the leg, just not synchratic with the other leg. I don't imagine he would be doing that if it were broken.

anyway...i'm lost...i want to help my little frog, but i'm not even sure what's wrong, or if nothing is and i just have a clumsy frog...

Definitely sounds like it's time for a trip to the vet. To locate one in your area see www.arav.org or www.herpvetconnection.com You might also consider removing the African clawed frog to a seperate aquarium to avoid possible problems in the future. Good luck,
