Optimum amount of UVA and UVB light for Green Anoles?

SharkKing Feb 14, 2005 10:19 PM

What is the optimum amount of both UVA and UVB light for Green Anoles? How, if at all, is the wattage of a given bulb related
to the amount of UV light it gives off? Is the answer the same
for bulbs which give off UVA light as well as for bulbs which
give off UVB light and what about bulbs which give off both
UVA and UVB light?

I've noticed that some (how many???) reptile supply companies don't even tell on their UV bulbs how much UVA light they produce
although I gather it's somewhere around 7% or so.

As far as bulbs which produce UVB light there seems to be some amount of consensus that about 3% is optimum. Although on the board here (KingSnake.com) I noticed and read the ad for a bulb which I believe says it produces 10% UV light (not sure if it's UVA or UVB - I assume it's UVA but maybe not). Peace.

Percentages listed on a bulb's box mean nothing in relation to how much UVB it puts out. It's irrelevant to start and would change anyway, since all UVB bulbs degrade with time. If you want all the juicy details (and some of it's heavy technical stuff), I recommend joining the UVB meter owners group on Yahoo.

Reptisun 5.0s are the most reliable UVB fluorescent out there (common opinion that I happen to share).

Torey, thanx for the info. Have you seen the Ad here on KingSnake.Com for the Reptisun 10.0? It says it produces 10.0% UVB and 30.0% UVA. What do you think? Are they making progress?

Hey, can Bowser rock? Anoles do ROCK!

Anything higher than a ZooMed ReptiSun 5.0 or a Hagen ReptiGlo 5.0 are a waste of time and money for Anoles. The higher yield UVA/UVB blubs are for desert dwellers that routinely get higher doses of UVA/UVB. In this case, more isn't better.

Totally agree with the post above, though I've not used the Hagen bulbs. Plus the jury's still out on the Reptisun 10.0 for me - haven't seen enough bulbs tested, and so far I'm not super wowed. Of course I keep uromastyx which do need desert level UVB, so I'm looking for that, too. For the anoles the regular tried and true (proven) bulbs are great.
