Is UV light and Incandescent (regular light bulbs light) lighting required for Green Anoles?

SharkKing Feb 14, 2005 10:25 PM

Is both regular lighting (regular light bulbs) and UV
(both UVA and UVB producing bulbs) lighting required/essential to the health and well-being of Green Anoles? Why? Don't both produce heat? Peace.

Incandescents produce heat but no UVB. UVB fluorescents produce UVB (usually), but no heat. If you want to provide both, you need both kinds of bulbs. Most anole terrariums are far too small (and 30-40 gallons is too small without a UVB meter) to use a mercury vapor bulb, which would provide UVB and heat.

I answered your post in the cage and habitat forum...I explained about the heat and UV..hope that helps

Exo Terra has a really good Reptile Lighting Guide..I'm not saying you have to use their lights..but it's a really good guide that will tell you all about lighting-what it is (electromagnetic radiation), visible light, UV light, intensity, what and why reptiles need certain lighting. You can get it at any petstore that sells Exo Terra lights.

...but Zoomed makes better bulbs.

BlazedBetty Feb 15, 2005 08:57 PM

What do you pay for the ZooMed bulbs anyway? The only ones we can get here are the ExoTerra, and when I asked them to order in some ZooMed bulbs they said that the 5.o that I wanted would cost me 80 bucks! So I just went with the Exo Terra

$80 for a Reptisun 5.0? Are they serious? Even at the overpriced pet stores around here they aren't more than $25 or $30 bucks. Of course, I don't get mine here - they're much cheaper getting them online, even with the shipping added in.

No no..$80 for a Zoomed bulb, give or take a couple depending on the size...but $80 for the size I asked them to order for me. That's why I just use the Reptisun, it's $55 for the 5.0 and $50 for the 2.0, and those are the 48"...still too friggin' much I guess! Perhaps I should be ordering online! Because I would like to be using the Zoomeds

BlazedBetty Feb 16, 2005 01:37 PM

oops, I thought you were asking if it was $80 for a ReptiGLO..but I see you said ReptiSUN...duh, haha ignore that last post..it's early for me Yeah..$80 for the Reptisun! Crazy eh!

Try Reptiledirect.com or LLLReptile. They are a lot less than $80

I'll have to check it out. Unfortunately, I live in NYC (USA) and
the local Pet Stores in my area (a few called Petland Discounts and a larger one called PetCo) don't have a lot in the way as far as serious care for keeping Herps (as pets???) in captivity.
I mean info-wise, but also product line as well and many of the store employees are pretty much just young folks with very little or almost no serious knowledge of caring for Herps in captivity. I actually brought my Green Anole at one and they had him listed on the tank as a Chameleon. Of course Green Anoles do change their colouring from Green to Brown, but technically they are most definitely not chameleons (even if some folk do seem to enjoy referring to them as "American" Chameleons). I do wonder how people managed before the world went online?

Thanx again, Betty! You *do* seem to know a thing or two about Reps/Herps. What got you interested, if I may be so foward to ask you? Me, it's something interesting to do at this point in my life and Herps certainly are quite different from our species
in a number of ways which makes them interesting to learn about to me. Peace.

Yeah, I live in the same sorta place..not much in the way of product availability, and stores with VERY little knowledge!
Thank gawd for these sites! Between reading everything I can in books and on the web, and asking ppl on this site, I've learned tons! You should check out a site called Under The LEaves, it's really good.
How did I get into them? To be honest with you, I've always loved reptiles (I was the dirty little girl in the muck lookin' for salamanders lol ) but I got into Anoles about 9 or 10 years ago when I went to someone's house and they had one in a tiny plastic container..just big enough for a plastic aquarium plant and a small rock...and it broke my heart, even though I knew nothing of them, it just didn't seem right (animals have a HUGE place in my heart)..so from there, I learned what I could..and I had to learn quick 'cause my brother stole the little guy from them lol! But it's pretty awesome because I'm always learning something new
