strange change in behavior

ktulu654 Feb 14, 2005 10:52 PM

my ~2 year old female leo has started to act funny. i am wondering if i should be worried. in the last about week and a half she has shed twice, both times failing to eat as much of her skin as usual. also she has eaten at most 4 mealworms, 2 silkworms, and 1 butterworm in the last 2 1/2 weeks. she is not getting much thinner but it is very unusual of her to leave any silk or butterworms behind and usally she snaps up any mealworms she see also. in addition she has been very reclusive in the last few weeks quickly going for one her hides when i walk into the room, which is very strange because she usually rushes to the glass waiting for me to feed her.

I can not figure out anything that might cause this. any help would be great. i guess i am wondering if this is normal for them to do this once in a while or if i should be worried.

Thanks
ktulu

it would be very common for females to produce infertile eggs with or without a male presence. As far as picking her up, you're going to have to get over that. Might as well get comfortable with handling her the right way now, esp. if you ever need to take her to the vet. Get someone at the petstore to show you if you're nervous.

i guess i dont know what you mean by handling her the right way but im not going to treat her the way the pet store did, way to ruff for my liking. she used to be quite calm and would often times climb right into my hand when i put it in her cage. now i know i can catch her and pick her up but it will stress her quite a bit.

OK. it sounded at first like you were uncomfortable handling her at all, which is obviously a problem. It really could be a lot of things. It may be weather change, it may be eggs, it may be parasites, it may be something serious, it may be nothing. I would suggest strongly that you look at her belly just to make sure it looks normal. Also, take fecal sample to the vet. Should only cost you about $25 or so. As long as she is not losing weight or egg bound, I wouldn't worry too much.
