FireSkink 13" and still growing????

Accidentalherps Feb 15, 2005 09:30 AM

My fireskink measures 13" long, which I read was how long they grew. He is shedding again, making me wonder if he is still growing. What is the maximum size for a FireSkink? he is healthy and beautiful but I may need to start looking for a bigger tank! He is in a 30gallon breeder & uses every inch of space including climbing on a few sturdy things.
Do herps shed even when they aren't growing?

thanks

Sasha

13 FROM what I read in my skink book is the size for large males. I guess he could get an inch or so bigger but thats big.
I wanted to ask you is he active? You mentioned he uses all of the tank and it makes me think he is active.
I love the colors on those skinks and looked into them while back but read all they do is hide 24/7 except when eating.
Yours seems to climb and explore so I guess you see him a lot?
Thanks

He is very active! He does most of his climbing & exploring in the morning & evenings, but I will still see him in the afternoons sometimes.
He has a uth under about 1/3 of his tank, a basking lamp that overlaps part of that, and then his UV light. He likes to stretch out along the glass sometimes, which makes it easy to measure him. There are two large granite rocks in there that he likes to lide over and under and around, and he really enjoys the african violet plant. It is in a pot, set in the tank. He likestomove it around (and everything else) and curl up in the pot.
To cool off he likes to go under his food dish.

He finally finished shedding and his colors are very striking! He is most active right after shedding, and sluggish when getting ready to shed.

I just got a great deal on a 75 gallon tank, so as soon as I figure out how to get it home I'll set it up for him. I like my critters to have room!

Nice didnt know they were that active. Yours is very lucky you give him a nice life. Its nice to see that.
I love the incredible colors they have . I keep a pair(M/F)of ocellated skinks in a 40 gallon long. They bask and explore but do hide in the sand, under decorations a lot.
nothing beats a fire skink male for color.
