Possible answer to that age old question

ginebig Feb 15, 2005 07:27 PM

There was some discussion about weather or not a retic could indeed eat a human. The following pics seem to be proof that they can. Mind you, I don't know if they are real or not, but I think I'm gonna be nice to my retics from now on.

Weren't there also picture of a large snake (either retic, rock or annie) eating a human on rotton.com a while ago? It was everywhere, I remember seeing four or five men standing around a red pickup truck with the snake in the bed of the truck and then seeing them cut him open and there was there friend. Anyone else remember seeing that?

Ive always been nice to my retics, baby them as baby's so hopefully they like you as adults. If not, well your dinner.

ok i looked it up and found it heres the site and then below that theres another story of a reticulated python trying to eat someone.

http://home.att.net/~crinaustin/Snake2.htm

A 23-foot-long python in Malaysia "attacked" and "squeezed a plantation worker to death and tried to swallow him" according to the Associated Press. Police shot and killed the python, which was the longest reported in Malaysia, according to a zoologist at the University of Malaya. At the time the python was killed, it had swallowed the victim's head and crushed some of his bones, according to the brother of the deceased human. From the description and location, the snake was probably a reticulated python, Python reticulatus, according to contributor Mark Paul Henderson. [Spokesman-Review, September 6, 1995 from Mark Paul Henderson, and Telerate News and Features, September 7 from Robert J. Paluch] After this unfortunate event, Malaysians were gripped by python-phobia apparently spurred by photos of plump pythons being captured after eating chickens, pigs, or dogs. Last year 36,000 pythons were legally killed by skin-trade hunters, officials worry that the bad publicity will result in illegal harvesting. Officials try to reassure the public. One said that a python is "a nice creature if it's not eating you." The only other recorded python-induced human fatality was in 1985. [The Wall Street Journal, October 23, 1995 from P.L. Beltz]

Persoanlly, I don't think a retic could swallow an adult human. A child easily, but not an adult. We've all seen pictures of retics eating huge meals like goats and pigs. Prey animals are streamlined and have very little shoulder definition. Once the snake gets the head in, everything else cones and makes inching the rest of the body in easier for the snake. Their jaws can stretch, but I don't think even the biggest of pythons could get their mouth over a set of adult shoulders. I've seen my 10 foot retics sit for an hour trying to get their mouth over a rabbit leg or shoulder. It just doesn't make sense.

As far as the photos, they always have the same thing going on. You have a couple good photos of a snake that has just consumed a large meal. The photos showing the body parts have the snake in a different place or a different time of day. I just don't buy it. The link to the other pictures has been filed as a fake and an urban myth. See link below.

Even my ball has taken large rats backwards, where he had to strech around rats legs, it depends on how the python were to get the person imo. If it were to get one shoulder in and the head, then the rest could be pulled in alot easier than just going directly down...

one thing to support the pics is that they were "eatten "head first. just a small detail that lends credibility.

That first pic is from a caouple years ago when a retic ate a calf in a village, it was in my newspaper the snake is still alive and was placed in a zoo or whatever they have over there. I'm just pointing out that one is deffinately not a human in it. I may even still have the article I will look around the house and scan and post it if I find it.

Yeah, those pictures (and ones like it) have been around for years . I've heard they were real. I've heard they were fake. I tend to think they are fake. I've got some of a African rock python eating a deer (which is about the size of a person).

The shoulders of an adult human are most likely too wide for a retic (or any other snake) to get past. Don't get me wrong though, they are capable of killing you still.

Most of these pictures are usually taken by someone that knows nothing about snakes, or are taken by the people who are the ones claiming it ate a person. So there's really never REAL proof. Hard to say.... either way, I feel bad that they killed a nice snake like that for no reason.

If it can kill you, what do you care if it eats you?!

ginebig Feb 18, 2005 10:46 PM

I tend to believe they are fake too, but I still won't rule out the possibility. If a snake that large is hungry enough he'll figure out a way past the shoulders. And in answer to that last question..............I think I'd like the turd saved and mounted over the fireplace

it was an annie that ate the guy and im pretty sure that that was fake picture when they should it cut open

joeysgreen Feb 18, 2005 05:39 AM

I've never been on rotten.com for good reasons but from some of the stuff that get's passed through email I can tell that alot of it is staged.
From the pic's I can't tell if it's fake or not, but for a little fame, why wouldn't someone get a little dirty and climb into a cut up snake?
As far as that pic of a rock eating a deer, I love that picture, but the deer isn't nearly as large as the white tailed or mule deer here in north america. Less than 100lbs anyway. (I can't remember the species name, but it was listed; old photo)
So can snakes eat people? I don't know but has anyone ever asked if we taste like chicken?

ginebig Feb 18, 2005 10:49 PM

ROTFLMAO!!! Oh, the picture that just ran through my mind!

worldsocold Feb 21, 2005 07:06 PM

To Hermitcore, Did you read the explanation on the site? It says anaconda in south America, YET, it's a retic in the back of a truck and appears more natural environment.

In reply to the rock eating a deer. It's an impala. Pretty small deer.

phreak Mar 06, 2005 04:42 PM

Thought I would also mention how fast an impala is. It must have been a crazy scene to see him just catch it. No matter what, I bet that rock was thinking "ahhhh crap.....I gotta eat this thing or the story won't sound as cool to my friends". lol
