Do All Beardies Go Through Brumation?

soulp97 Feb 16, 2005 10:00 AM

Hello,

From reading the posts in this forum, it seems that some beardies go through a period of brumation and some don't. Is it a natural phenomena, or a sign that something in the cage is not set correctly? Do both males and females brumate?

I am asking because for the last month or so, my male beardie has been very lathargic. He doesn't want to eat crickets or veggis, but will sometimes snack on mealworms. Because he's not eating nearly as much as he used to, he's not pooping too often either. His coloring and body weight still look as good as ever. I can't see any signs of infection or illness. But i am concerned because of his laziness and reluctance to eat. Also, he seems to prefer to hide more than normal. When he does move near the basking light, he tends to stay further away as if he doesn't like the normal 105 degree heat.

What do you think?

I really appreciate everyone's feedback.

Thanks,
Jon Z.

I think all beardies do to an extent,a llthough some more than others. For example, this season my female didn't really brumate much, she spends more time on the cool side, but is still eating, pooping and even basking, but she has definately slowed down a little bit. Whereas other peoples beardies practically dont wake up the whole winter!

have a vet check and a fecal test for parasites.

if thats clear then let the dragon take a nap.

often when a dragon has cocidia it will act the way you have described.

so most folks here will advise as I just did, check to be sure then go from there.
