Mealies as primary food

tetrafish2 Feb 16, 2005 12:30 PM

Hello, I was wondering if mealies have a good amount of nutrients for them to be the staple diet of leopard geckos with maybe and occasional cricket. Do any of you have your leos exclusively on a mealworm diet? Is this not recommended, thanks this is a great forum.

Mealies are fine as a staple diet. I have kept my leos almost exclusively on superworms (I have had my geckos for 13 years)and they are doing great. I like superworms because it takes less to fill up your gecko, they move around a lot, and they are easy to keep. I keep mine in a small Kritter Keeper with oats, bran, dry baby cereal, and baby carrots. My leos eat 4-5 worms per feeding, 3 times a week. So that is 12-15 superworms a week per gecko. I also feed my leos in a separate container and that keeps the cage clean from uneaten or dropped food. I never feed crickets (they are noisy, messy, and smelly) but I do supplement my geckos with f/t pinky mice, butterworms, and meal worms a few times a month.

I have no problem feeding my leos mainly mealworms.

I do avoid it on animals less than 20 grams though. The hard outer shell of the mealworm can be difficult to digest for a small leo.

i seem to have read somewhere that the oldest captive leo in the world never ate a thing but meal worms.

Do you guys think it would be ok as a primary diet for my Madagascar Ground Geckos? They are rather small, but don't want anything to do with the crix..love the mealies though. But yeah, my concern was the hardness on their system.
