Color change in 2 species(lots of pics)

jtclark Feb 16, 2005 08:24 PM

I think it is finally time to post a pic of my Baird and the change she is going through. I don't know what you think but she is getting a very gold color to her. Do you think there is a chance she is a Mexican Baird as oppossed a Texas? She just looks so gold right now I was curious what Mexican look like at this point. She is an 04 so if anybody has a Mex to compair I would love to see some pics. Here she is from when I got her and tonight at feeding time.

Here is the second species which is obviously OT but I got him around the same time as I got the Baird and he has gone through a ton of changes himself. I love this little guy(most of the time)...

Ive never seen 2 bairds exactly alike. That's the reason I like them.My male is tan with alot of yellow and orange plus still has the (aluiminum)sp. brushed over look.My older female is a creme tan with yellow and orange. My juvie is getting some yellow to her.
If there mixed I dont care. There great snakes and I wish I would of started keeping them years ago...Paul

The mexican ssp of the bairds is an extremely easy animal to identify in that it has a grey head as versus the Texas ssp.. The animal in question appears to be a normal but very pretty Texas Bairds. In my opinion they are one of the most under rated of all the rat snakes when it comes to subtile looks and temperment.

Hi Folks,

I think that you have a Mexican Baird's there. I only have Texans, so I have not seen the stages of color change for the Mexicans, but I have a feeling that as your snake developes its stripes, its head will turn gray. I did see some gray on top of the head in the photo. Your snake could also be a mix of Mexican abd Texas Bairds. You should know for sure in another year or so.

Nice photos. Thanks for posting. And John, that is a great looking Trans-Pecos Rat Snake in your post.

I took the pic today. Your female baird is showing a lot of nice color already. The breeder could tell you if she's a Mexican or Texan if you can get ahold of the breeder. If you aren't able to verify the lineage, then you might call her a bairds rat snake for now. Mexican bairds can take up to 3 years to complete their color and pattern transition. If she's a Texan, then you and Steve Garrett need to comunicate. She appears that she may be developing a chartreuse scale edge color. I've only seen that much chartreuse color in 2 bairds. I'm sure there are more. I just wanted to make a point the bairds with chartreuse aren't very common it seems. Steve Garrett has a real pretty male and has been looking to breed him. I saw a pic posted of the other one I've seen, but I can't remember who posted it.

Try doing a quick search in the photo gallery for bairds and having a quick skim through the results, if the other person had posted a picture of their bairds there's a good chance it could be there. I know I put my pics in the photo gallery.

Thanks for the advice. That is a good point.
