GA law and a few pics

jtclark Feb 16, 2005 08:36 PM

I just interviewed for a promotion that is looking pretty good and may be relocating to Atlanta. I know that corns are prohibited there but is there anyway to register a snake before moving there so that you may keep it? I'm sure that is a long shot but this is my first snake so I do not want to get rid of her. She's the one that started the obsession. I also have a grey rat, so is it prohibited too? I know they are found there also. I would hate to have to get rid of my smakes, it would be half of my dinky collection. To keep it interesting here is a pic of my amel motly Cosmo and grey rat Tennesse Jed.

If they are being used for educational purposes, you can get a permit, but you will need really big scissors to cut through the red tape, and very tall boots to wade through all the....I mean....good luck. All native NON-VENOMOUS snakes are prohibited in the state of Georgia, and they make no provisions for snakes produced/purchased in other states, or morphs. You may, however, capture and keep as many Eastern Coral snakes as you wish.

i think your corn is safe because it is an albino. The rat though if it is native to gawga its got to go. Sorry. Or just keep them all and dont bring them outside or anything. When i lived in georgia i had about 10 corns, kings and rats that i caught in Gawga so there you go

I don't mean to be offensive, but I guess there isn't any way around that, so here goes.

If you live in a State, county, or town where snakes of some sort are not legally possible to be kept...DON'T KEEP THEM!!!

Any time somebody ignores the laws of the community in which they live, all they really do is solidify the idea in the minds of the majority that we are nothing more than a sub-group of malcontents with "something wrong with us," or we wouldn't want snakes as pets in the first place! Whenever a herper is found to be breaking the law by way of his herps, we ALL suffer. Yes, you may not get caught, but why run the risk, when you are risking more than your own consequences? You may be content to pull the beard of the sleeping giant of public opinion, then brag about how brave you were to throw caution to the wind, but how can you do so knowing that, when he wakes (and he will, eventually), we ALL will suffer the consequences.

A few years ago, prarie dogs were found to have carried some disease into a State where they were a non-native species, and some folks got sick. The enitire prarie dog "market" was shut down over night, because it was discovered that a few unscrupulous individuals were flouting the laws in relation to shipping. Think that sort of think can't happen with snake? With PETA looking for any and every reason to take them from in the first place? C'mon...wake up folks!

If the area in which you live has unreasonable laws (as I firmly believe GA's to be)...work to change them. But do it from within the boundaries of the law, not by breaking them with total disregard. Intelligent people who band to gether can accomplish a great deal of good in our society, but vigilantes who think that "it's a free country, and I can do whatever I want" will do nothing but bring the governmental oppresion, waiting to be dropped on us, down around our ears.

Some of you may think I am nothing more than "Chicken Little" worrying about the sky falling again. If so, my added gray hairs are the only ill-effect. But if I'm right, and the majority of experienced breeders who agree with me...if we're all right, what will you be able to say to everyone in our little community of herpers, if your house gets busted and the laws are tightened even furhter? What then?

I agree with you 100%. If I do end up getting this new job I will have to get rid of my 2 snakes. I have already started looking at how to do this if need be. I plan on growing my collection so I do not want to put it at risk to keep "illegal" snakes.

I don't know if you saw the episode of San Fransisco Animal Cops(my Tivo recorded it since it had reptiles in the description)but there was a gentleman that lost a huge collection since constrictors are illegal in San Fran. He got caught because a UPS worker got spooked when a ball python moved in a box she was delivering. This was enough for the SPCA to go into his house. I just keep thinking of this when I start to think that nobody would find out if I didn't get rid of my corn and grey rat.

I'm not going to say I haven't thought about keeping them, but I don't think that it would right thing to do so they will find a new home.

I'm a noob, what does n/p mean?

thanks
Andrew

n/t means no text, n/m means no message. They obviously mean the same thing, just different people use different abbreviations. Then you also have eom which means end of message (at least I hope it does).
