a female with a bad attitude?

dragonvet Feb 16, 2005 10:18 PM

what is this i here about females bieng hatched as hot females? this guy at petco where, i usually by my melies and waxies said. the female leo i was looking to get was not a good choice because she was a hot female. he told me she could not stand her cagemates. and she actually hurt a 2 month old pretty bad. 1st of all i told him the other two leos that were her size {7-8}inches was or should be ok 2 keep together but the babies? their were 4 babys in their.he stated that it would be ok to keep em all in their. that he would just make sure there was a good amount of food all the time. i sugested he keep the babies seperate and he also clean out the melies that had already turned into pupa{aliens} was i wrong in that. can leo's eat pupa of melies and if so is it good 4 them? i really liked this female gecko she was a tangerine i think or high yellow like all the body was a bright coller. she was about 7-8 months old.so should i get her to put with my other female or do you think she will hurt my dixie?

When the eggs are being incubated the temp. at which they're incubated in the first few weeks determines the sex of the gecko. Under 82 deg. F and they're all female, between 82 and about 90 they're all male. Any temps higher than that either kill the embryos or if they live often produce a "hot" female (you may also hear them called a high temperature female). These females will not be able to reproduce, and more often than not bully around the other geckos living with them.

So to answer you're question, if you're buying the gecko to keep alone in a tank, there's probably nothing wrong with it. If you're going to keep it with other geckos, or try breeding it, then it's probably not a good idea. Hope this helps!

You absolutely told him right about separating the babies and about the mealies. I hope he listened.
An aggressive female leo is not necessarily a hot female, but if she really is aggressive then she will probably cause trouble if you put her with your dixie. BUT... a bigger leo picking on a smaller leo is really typical of ALL leos, and doesnt necessarily mean that female is a bully. I guess if you really like her coloring you could buy her knowing that it might not work out with her and dixie as cagemates and if it doesnt you'd have to get a new enclosure just for her.

whatever you do, you need to quarantine her in a separate cage either way. only keep leos of the same size together. and i have found that my 'hot female' does okay with others, but that vaires by gecko- they all have individual personalities. whenever i buy a new gecko, i just proceed as though they might need to be housed alone permanently.
