Need HELP w/Giant Day Gecko

vegasbilly Feb 16, 2005 11:04 PM

I have an adult male who, since the last two weeks that I've had him, hasn't seemed to move from where he stays...at the top of the tank.

I am not a newbie to herps, but am a newbie w/Phelsuma. The cage is well planted, it is a screen/glass cage typically used for Chams.

I have the requisite UVB and hot spot etc. and humidities are good. Ambient temp is app. 82F w/the hottest spot at around 92F. I have not seen him eat at all. The crickets walk right by unnoticed. Is he just still freaked out at the new "digs"? What would a "normal" activity level be?

Any tips, ideas, would be a great help.

Thanks in advance,

Bill

Most day geckos, captive bred, acclimate to their new surroundings less than a week. Anything longer and something is usually not right. When the environment is correct, most day geckos wander around their enclosure and then return to basking areas when needed.

Are you sure you have captive bred? Possible he is sick?
Is the humidity adequate? 65%-70% for grandis
Is the bottom of the enclosure too cool so that he must stay high all day long?

Do you have a place for him to hide? PVC pipe or piece of bamboo?

Do you have a vetical perch unde the floresent light?

you said the cage is typical of chameleons, the cage might have trouble holding in the heat, unless the room temp is the same as the ambient in the cage. he might just be cold

have tried fruit?
