Sculpt From A Russian Tortoise - Ordwell

Adam Willich Jul 07, 2003 01:54 PM

This is a sculpt that the wife has created using a Russian Tortoise shell. She has titled him Ordwell -
We would like comments or thoughts on creations like this.
She would like to do more but we find it hard to find the smaller tortoise shells.
Currently in search of baby sulcatta shells. If any one can provide information on where to find these please share.
Best Regards,

Ok that is seriously creepy. I hope the tort was dead and u diden't kill him. It looks like something out of labrinth. Thats gonna give me nightmares. Whooahhaaa

It brings up painful memories of my late Russian, Yevgeni.

I buried him intact in his own little tomb filled with peppers, sqush zucchini, and paintings of russian girl torts for the next life.
I couldn't imagine sending him off without all his bodyparts.

Okay this is 'the wife' LOL
Just wanted to let you guys know that no critters we sacrificed in the creation of this piece. The carapace of this unfortunate tortoise was purchased at our local reptile swap from an 'interesting' fellow who sells such things (skulls, shells...etc). I hope I haven't upset anyone too seriously, we do have a darling little redfoot and if she were to pass she would be entombed intact with her beloved strawberries and perhaps (inspired by your lead) some kind of pic of a red footed guyanan hotty!
Hope that kinda clears that up... although it may open another can of worms
Thanks guys!
Jill

Ok! that helps a little bit, but I still have some issues with it. I will have to let them go however and remeber to each his own!
It must of taken alot of work and time.

Nicodemus Jul 08, 2003 04:33 PM

I wasn't trying to open a mean can of worms. I mean everyone has different preceptions of art. I mean heck, theres that guy in germany who's art consists of preserved human cadavers, and some people are amazed by it.

I just wanted to give my input. I ask the same when I ask people to look at my art...is it scary? distasteful? etc

Would you make a doll out of your mother skull after she has pasted on? If the answer is yes then seek help and for God's sake don't breed.
If the answer is no then why do this to a helpless tortoises?!

?
I think you are over reacting. I'm assuming you are wearing leather shoes, possibly have a feather pillow, wear wool? These are all animal products we use for our own enjoyment. At least this is a tasteful and creative use of the carapace of a passed on turtle. I'd be honored if my progeny used my husk in some way they enjoyed. I won't be needing it after I die, after all.

geckoman2003 Jul 08, 2003 11:17 AM

Once again I have managed to "Mix it up again"! I do believe in animal products. I am an avid duck hunter and a have a dear head that my grandfather shot mounted on my wall. Which I am very proud of, by the way.
As I said in my other post "To each his own"! By the way the leather I am wearing came from a cow that was raised for that as well as other purposes. I also love a good steak!
So litten up and take a joke!

I did not get upset, I just didn't want you feeling upset at something without thinking it all the way through. Glad to hear I just misread your post.

Adam,
I think your wife is a very talented artist.
I enjoy reading fantasy novels and from the looks of it I would say your wife does also.
Don't let these people get you down. I am sure many of them use animal parts for many of their everyday uses.
It kinda reminds me of the PETA freaks I see around here occasionally that stand outside protesting wearing fur coats without realizing their shoes are made of leather LOL!
Oh well, You can't please everyone.

PETA "freaks," as you so charmingly call them, do not wear leather shoes or anything else. PETA is VERY anti-leather.

I wanted to say this the first time I saw it but computer problems... you know?
Anyway, the imagination and the creativity that went into that character is great. (not to mention the post on KS)
While this is blaitent(sp?) advertisement, I don't mind at all to see this kind of artistic quality. I really like it.
What is it worth to you in time and effort?
(please answer this off list)
I also need to know where you are located. I seem to remember Germany and if so are you a member of the DGHT?

The sculpture is incredible!! As talented as your wife is, couldn't she also sculpt the shell? This would eliminate any of the controversy that's bound to come up using real shells and I'm certain anyone with that much talent could do it. Besides, I can just imagine some unethical soul finding out you have a use for the shells and ... well, you know. Shudder!

Just a thought. In any case, my compliments to your wife on her fine work.
