shipping snakes sick?

jat723 Feb 17, 2005 01:55 AM

I am purchasing a 12 foot burmese python from someone i met online. I sent him the money and now he is saying that he is worried that the snake might get sick if the temperature drops too low in transit. He is shipping the snake from TX to NJ overnight by air mail. The temperateres in NJ now are between 30 and 40 degrees. He said that he would be packaging the snake in a crate with heat pads but is not sure if that will keep him warm enough. Does anyone know if the heat pads should keep the snake warm enough to ship overnight by air mail? If it does happen to get too cold do you think he will get sick from a few hours being cold or would it take a longer period of time before he got sick? Thanks ... any info you might have would be appreciated.

By looking at most herp retail sites they say that shipments won't go out unless temps are between X and Y. This is for the safety of the herps involved of course.

Be patient and tell the shipper that you don't mind if he waits until both sides warm up a bit before he ships the burm. This is a normal thing to do and not a sign that he wants to walk off with your money.

Every herp I have had shipped during winter has always come in FREEZING even with the heat packs. I say wait another month or keep an eye on the weather. It was 70F yesterday here in VA and turtles, and cottonmouths were out. YOu could always take advantage of those days.

Virginia eh? Sounds cool, I wish we had cottonmouths and turtles up here in Alberta!

CA huh? I thought I saw some non-American English in your posts!
