Mysterious Death of Indonesian WTF

bluetubeodyssey Feb 17, 2005 12:16 PM

This morning I found Chabo, my Indo WTF, dead in my tank. It's very strange, because she's been extremely healthy, as are the other WTFs in the tank. Also, I almost didn't notice that she had passed on, because she was just sitting in the water bowl and her eyes were open. I only noticed because she wasn't breathing, and then when I touched her and she was stiffened up, I knew her sad fate.

It leads me to think though that she must have died of old age. I got her from Petco this January because she was an adult and I wanted a female companion for my male Aussie WTF who's almost 2 years old. Do you think perhaps she was a retired breeder? I don't blame Petco, since I got Wabo and Mushu there and they are beautiful frogs and I love them. I just wish the suppliers wouldn't do things like this...

Any thoughts, similar experiences?

Also, see how healthy she was? This was a pic of her from February 1st that I posted in the photo gallery.

She sure was a beautiful frog...

What kind of substrate do you keep them on. Any chance there is any mold growing anywhere?

I lost a couple of RETF's this same way and it turned out that my substrate was bad and I hadn't even realized it.

Also parasites can cause sudden death like this.

Really no way of telling. I suppose old age might be the culprit but again -- hard to say.

Sorry for your loss. It really does stink when you have them looking great by all outward appearances on Monday and Tuesday they are dead in their tracks.

Their substrate consists of a bottom layer of paper towels with about 3/4" of the expandable coconut fiber on top. She spent 90% of her time on the glass walls in the tank corners though.

Either way, I'll check tonight for mold. Is it just fuzzy white/green stuff? And how does it harm them, eating it, or absorbing it through skin, or what?

Thanks for the reply, helps to know others have been through this.

I am so sorry you lost one of your little froggie buddys. I have had this happen to me before at well. Being a Vet Tech I had the other frogs checked out by my doctor when it happned to me, and nothing was wrong, they were in perfect health.

Parasites could be a source, but you would need to do a necropsy on her, or at least find some of her fecal matter and have a vet look at it (we do this at our clinic for a small fee)
Its also very possible she was perfectly healthy and just died of old age, I used to work for Petco and we never knew what age the frogs were we received unless they were sub-adults.

I am always super wary of parasites, and have all of my animals checked regularly even if they seem healthy. One of my co-workers came to the hospital the other day with her pet rat sick. Everything seemed fine, she only fed pellets and rat food and had him checked up all the time. However, when we obtained a fresh fecal sample it was infested with pinworms and nematodes. Reptiles will be more suseptable to this because we feed live food (that could be infested with parasites). Its a horrible circle But if you check you froggies once a year at least (at least a fecal exam) you might be amaizd at the stuff they can contract in a seemingly secure enviroment.

From the photo, it does not appear to be an Indonesian White rather an Australian White. Secondly, the Australian whites can live many year (almost 20) if I am not mistaken. Something else killed your frog and it was not his age. JERRY
