frogresearcher Feb 17, 2005 05:23 PM

My 2 baby res have been basking alot. It's been going on for a couple of weeks. I dont see them eat often but they do but lately they have been basking all day. Is that normal or what?

I would not say it is normal, however I am not sure that it is something to be concerned about. Sometimes RES bask more often.

How cold is your water? If it is below 70 it is probally just too cold and they are keeping warm. Try a heater set at about 75 and see what happens.

Do they have other symtoms? I once had a female who basked a lot to get rid of a "cold". She had "snot" [for lack of a better word this time of night] around/coming out of her nose and just needed a couple days to dry out and recover. If you suspect that this is the case you might want to take your turts to the vet quickly. A sick hatchling is nothing to mess around with.

I am a little surprised that hatchlings are basking so much while being watched. They are usually skittish and jump in the water at every little thing. I currently have 3 hatchlings in a small tank with the water at around 72 and a nice basking spot. They show no signs of hibernation/burnation or "brave" basking.

I will need more info on your setup and anything you think might help me try to help you. One last note, while I have 9 turts from hatchling to 4 years old I am not a herpetologist so if you are really concerned seek professional assistance.

well everything seems normal; it just sounds likethey have gotten use to you. I have a couple turtles that are that comfortable, but none of my hacthlings. So I guess I am a little jealous. Keep an eye on the water temp, but I would not worry.
