silicone safety?

agcarf Feb 17, 2005 09:15 PM

I have recently setup a terrarium background using spray foam from a can and sealed it with 100% black silicone (I used black jungle as a template)

http://www.blackjungle.com/gallery/talltank/page1.html

Its been two days since applying the silicone but I can still smell it...isn't silicone odourless? Does this mean its still wet and hasn't cured? It says 24 hour for complete curing.

Does anyone know how long I sould wait before added my darts

Thanks

Smell like vinegar? That's pretty normal. Frogs should be fine, but I would rinse out the tank (spray down and then siphon out if you don't have substrate in yet). Also, tanks don't vent out the smell well because of lack of air movement. You can use a fan to circulate air for a few hours to move the smell.

Just a thought, but could high humidity and either high/low temps plus poor ventilation affect how long it takes to cure?

Leave the tank open. For the GE silicone 1 it is about 72 hours. Your frogs should be in their nursery/quarantine quarters for a few weeks after you get them, anyway. I like to establish my terrariums long before introducing frogs-- make sure the plants are growing and your water features are working, so you don't have to disturb it with the frogs in residence.
