Ball python housing in pet store question

deuce02 Feb 17, 2005 11:31 PM

I was just curious, all of the pet stores i have seen balls in(Always hatchlings/small juveniles) they house multiple balls in the same enclosure. Now they seem very well taken care of, set ups are all nice, but everything ive read go against this. I was just curious on your opinions. Does this cause more stress on the snakes?

Yes, it is stressful on the snakes, and it's bad practise. But most pet stores are more concerned with selling than proper housing. Sometimes the size of the business has a lot to do with it also. They can fit more in the store if they put a bunch in one enclosure. Thus, hopefully selling more snakes. There are many concerns about this, unclean conditions, the possible spread of mites or some kind of disease. It's simply not the responsible thibg to do, but some pet stores just don't take these things into consideration.

thats what i kinda figured. A friend of mine was looking to buy from a pet store and i told him basically the same thing. its just hard getting a store to put animals in their own enclosure. Ive only been to one that puts snakes alone but they were very dirty.
thanks

Yeah it's a space and money issue. If they don't have lots of snakes and other animals to sell they don't make as much money. But also, they don't have the space to keep every animal in its own cage with it's own water bottle, soaking bowl, hide spots, food bowl or whatever else.
