Sexing Australian Water Dragons

bast Feb 18, 2005 06:23 AM

Hello All,

I have two young AWDs. They are 1.5 to 2 feet total lenght. Is there a way to sex them at this age/size. They both seem to be developing red breasts. Do femoral pores hold any clues in this species?

Thank you,

Brian

I have CWD and they are closely related to AWD. By 18-24 mos. your dragons should be sexable. A females femoral pores remain smooth and almost invisible; a males become larger and more apparent. A male should by this age be showing clear characteristics that differentiate him from a female. Triangular shape to the head, higher spikes on the nuchal crest, widening of the base of the tail with much larger spikes than a female counterpart. My website and webcamera will allow you to see Chinese Water Dragons of both sexes. My dragons are not yet 2 years old. (about 22 months).
