First clutches of 2005...

Camlon Reptiles Feb 18, 2005 11:59 AM

We feel so lucky everytime this happens and today was a good kick off for our 2005 season with 2 clutches laid this morning and more on the way!

This is a great example of waiting for your females to get big before breeding. She weighed over 2500 grams when we started breeding her for the first time, and she produced 11 EGGS weighing 1032 grams! She was purchased from a pet owner and is probably 4 to 5 years old.

Good luck to everyone for the 2005 seaon and it's great to see all these eggs and hatchlings coming so early this year.

On this female we performed an Ultrasound on October 9th and saw 1.0 cm follicles at which time we placed her with the male and we observed breeding on that same day. We also placed her with and saw breeding on December 9th, then she went into a shed on January 14th, she shed on the 22nd and started staying on heat constantly until she laid.

I might also mention that she was placed with the male on several other dates however no other breeding was seen. We also performed several Ultrasounds to check follicle developement and saw what we thought were eggs developing in January and they were.

This is our first year using the Ultrasound and it's proving out be a great piece of equipment.

{quote}She weighed over 2500 grams when we started breeding her for the first time{/quote}

So how much did she weight right before or after laying? I'm wondering if she got up close to 3,000 grams or if she laid well over the expected 1/3 of her pre lay weight.

Camlon Reptiles Feb 19, 2005 11:09 AM

The weight I had on her prior to breeding was 2500 grams in October. Her weight yesterday after laying is 1968 grams, so with the eggs weight of 1032 grams she would have weighed exactly 3000 grams prior to laying. As a note this female has always been a good feeder and ate through December 2004.

I also attached an image of the belly of this female after I had removed and washed her, so the weight loose can be seen by those who haven't seen it before. We always get questions about females and how big they should be prior to breeding and this shows how much body fat they use producing eggs. She won't stay sucked in like this however until she puts the weight back on plus some her skin will sag slightly on the sides.

if i had known you had this beutiful girl, i would have sent ya my 5 year old male granite, and we could see what the supers are gonna be like. my granite proved genetic last year, now to wait and get his daughters ready for some breeding.

good luck on your litter there.
