Brain damaged!

gavinclews Feb 18, 2005 01:48 PM

To add to the post i gave yesturday, i think the baby maybe a little backward if you know what i mean. He doesnt seem all there. He is walking round in circles on the bottom of the viv. He doesnt seem to be able to lift his head up much but seems fine. He isnt dying or anything. I wonder if he was droped or something before i got to him as this could have caused the problem. Anyone ever heard of anything like this before?? All together i rescued 10 and his other 9 brothers and sisters are doing fine. They are all fattening up nicely. It took about 2 days but they started eating in the end. Its just this one now that is giving me problems. I am running out of ideas of how to get him back to normal and healthy. Any information on raising sick babies would be great. There maybe something i havent tried. I will try and save him and keep trying until the end. I am not a quitter and if it means i have to look after him for the rest of his life then i will. I just dont like the thought of giving up if there is any hope. SO COME ON PEOPLE, RALLY ROUND AND SEE WHAT YOU CAN COME UP WITH TO SAVE THIS DRAGON!!

I replied to the initial post below as well.
Sorry to hear one isn't doing so well .
Certainly does sound like neurological damage of some sort. Could be physical (like being dropped), could be metabolic. Get some good quality calcium and vitamin supplements and make sure your UV lighting is in prime condition. Just to rule out impaction, has he pooped?

I would definitely isolate him, and immediately. If he needs supportive feeding, some of the tips I gave in the other post may be helpful.

I've nursed some seemingly hopeless cases myself, so I understand your determination and commend your compassion. If he is not in any apparent pain and you are willing, just keep him fed and comfortable and what will happen will happen. You'll know you did all you could, in any case. Best of luck to you.

Hi, yes it has done a poo today and other than the unusual behavior it is fine. I havent seen it eat yet but if its pooed then it must have eaten something but other than that its ok. I am a experienced breeder but i have rescued these and this is the first problem i have had so my conditions are all perfect. Like i say the other 9 are all fattening up and starting to look healthy again.

Im not 100% expert on beardies yet, but I worked for a very high vet in the central FL area for about 2 years. We had a bunch of animals, dogs, cats, iguanas, and even birds, come in when their owners said they were walking in cricles, couldnt pick up there head, but were alive none the less. It was neurological problems every time. Its an imbalance in the brain stem that causes it. It could have been anything, hereditary, malnutrition, poor vitamin intake, anything! Again not an expert on Beardies but this was the case everytime for all these other animals. Depending on the severity of it, there was never a "cure" per say. But then again some animals stopped eating and everything, they could obviosly try to fix that. Im sorry to here about your BD. Take care!

I'm raising my first beardie so I don't have much experience to help you...I give my beardie water by dripping it onto his nose from a syringe (minus the needle)...Good Luck...wish I could help in some way...
