Lost leo to liver failure...

Mayo Feb 18, 2005 02:13 PM

I took Freckles to the vet to see about her change in energy, loss of appetite and dark belly. The vet looked at her in the morning and said she did look like she had problems. Before he was able to examine her in the afternoon she had passed. When he called I expected him to tell me his diagnosis, not that she had died. He did a free necropsy on her. He said her liver was black and just crumbled. There was some sort of liver infection, and a build up of fluid. He said even if I had brought her in a week ago or two weeks ago, there really was nothing that could have been done. He didn't have an answer to what exactly caused it. He said she could have ovulated and the egg forced in a wrong direction, bacteria that dissolve it could have infected the liver.

Well down to two leos. Have lost 4 of these little guys. Ever one to some freak occurence. The vet says I am doing everything right just having really bad luck. All I know is that whatever happens to my remaining two, these will be my last leopards. I am sticking to pythons, never had any trouble there. It is dishearting to hear that an 8 year old has a breeding colony. And I work my rear off researching and buying to lose 4 of 6. I feel horrible for them. The $1500 or so I have spent bothers me less than the fact that I just seem to not have what it takes for a leopard.

Keep up the good work, and may everything always go well for the rest of you.

Matt

I'm really sorry to hear about your loss but giving up isn't the answer. If we all gave up after we had a pet die no one would have pets at all. Think about it this way you made them happy before they went and thats all we can do for our animals. Its better that you took care of them before they died than to have them die in a pet store or with someone that didn't care about them. Don't give up on them just because you've had run of bad luck because if I did that I wouldn't have half the animals I have now.

from the same place/breeder everytime? There could be a connection there. If you don't and they have died from disease/infections, maybe starting fresh with brand new enclosures and furniture could help if there is a disease lurking in your house.

I does make me kind of wonder if you are infact doing something wrong.... It would help alot if you discribed the way you keep them....
ie; temp, humidity, substrate, suppliments, feeding, and other things along those lines.....
People in here might be able to help you keep the remaining leos alive......
Anyway, good luck with the other two.....

I've had hard times with my geckos too. My first one the cat discovered and ate, the second one would not eat or shed- I think it had a faulty gene or something, and i almost lost my third one but we found him. Now i have 3 geckos right now with a 35 gallon tank and they are really cool.

I lost one to kidney failure after 4 meds, 5 trips to the vet, daily attention, etc. It sucks, but I know the ones I have now are grateful for all I learned from that experience!

it always takes a pretty big toll on us to lose a pet..

last year i lost 8 leos due to "unconfirmed illnesses" and 19 eggs due to not having the right things to incubate

after that i was ready to give up completely but i didnt and i now was 25 supre healthy leos and 15 healthy eggs that should be hatching any day now, i changed the way i was keeping the elos, and the supplements along with their diets, at that time i was using trex leo dust and crickets, i now use rep-cal, vionate and mealworms, and i keep my geckos in racks now with no supstrate and i use meat trays as hides with damp papertowel under it

when one door closes, another one opens, dont give up, things will only get better
