Grape-like object in ig's mouth

MissMiniZoo Feb 18, 2005 04:39 PM

I have a vet appt. on Feb 28, but I'm thinking it would be wise to try to get in ASAP. My ig has been a holy terror lately and I noticed something VERY odd in his mouth the other day. It looks like a smaller sized grape near the back of his tongue. The vet's office said I might be seeing his trachea, but I don't know....I'm worried. He has been EXTREMELY aggressive lately. His nose is all beat up from attacking thru the cage. Does anyone know what an ig's trachea looks like or, better yet, does anyone have a picture???

When an ig opens his mouth, at the base of his tongue is like a lump of some sort with a hole in it, that is normal. I don't know what it's called, I've never liked biology or anatomy due to the fact that I'm extremely squeamish. If your iguana's nose is beat up, I'd say put neosporin on it, but you might run the risk of him licking it off. That would be no good. I would definitely try to get him in sooner. I've also had problems with trying to get my reptiles in to see vets early, and usually end up taking them to the emergency vet at a really high price. I don't understand that, if a dog or cat gets hurt, the vet will see them asap, if a reptile gets hurt, even if the vet is on duty, you have to make an appt. Or call all over the city to find a herp vet willing to see your pet earlier. I think we need more people to become herp vets.

Thanks for your reply. I feel kinda dumb that I dont know if it has always been there or not, but I dont really make it a habit of looing deep inside my ig's mouth. Actually, I kinda feel good that I never had to...an open ig mouth is a bit scary!! Anyway, I feel a little better that you described it as a lump, but I haven't been able to see a hole in it. I'm gonna call on Monday to see if I can get in earlier. I agree that there should be more herp vets!! It's about impossible to get in when you need to!

I'm ready to go into herpetology because the only qualified vet that i'm sure has had at least 1 day of experience with iguanas or other lizards costs me $180 for a check-up. i also looove herps ^_^

Yea, the only herp vet in my area that seems to know what she's talking about, with iguanas at least, costs over $200 just for a yearly rountine checkup. (She's an iguana owner herself.) But when the gecko I had became impacted, not one vet in the whole city would see him for at least a month. I had to go to an emergency vet office that cost nearly $250 for 15 minutes in the office, only to be told that I should've got him into a vet sooner. I've heard that some SPCAs have herp vets on staff, but I haven't been able to find one yet.
