MY THOUGHTS ON RED AXANTHICS ...what u think?

reptimals Feb 18, 2005 06:31 PM

first off i think they are great looking ball pythons , my thoughts are on the genetics ... i have been following the posts and pics of them and i have worked with morphs of all kinds for several years and they seem to look and act more like a co-dom./ dominant trait. I mean the het red axanthics are pretty easy to distinguish and they hold much of the same traits as the true red axanthics .. the true red axanthics look like an intensified het red axanthic... just like a pastel works .. u have the normal pastels and the super pastels .. they both resemble eachother and one form is an intensified version that is dominant .. so are the HET red axanthics maybe the co-dom. form and the true red axanthics are the dominant form???? i know some recessive traits show so called markers or have a certain look.. for example mojaves are a "het" look for a white ball python.. also het pieds having the black stomach striping and so on... these "het" looks are different looking then what they produce... the red axanthics and het red axanthics share much similarity ...anywa yi can be missing something or maybe i misunderstood the pics i saw but what do all u think? they are great looking ball pythons and when a het red axanthic is bred to a normal doesnt it produce "hets" that look like it as well??? seems co-dom. to me .. thanks alot and good luck with everyones breedings...

There needs to be more breedings to know for sure. They all do have that jungle and black back pattern so far.

Either way... it's big fun to see it play out!

You're right on except for a common term usage mistake in the sentence above. Rather than the mutation type terms "co-dom. form" and "dominant form" you should be using the genotype terms "heterozygous" and "homozygous".

A mutation’s type is either recessive, co-dominant, or dominant, it doesn't change depending on if you are looking at a heterozygous or homozygous mutant example of that mutation. For example, albino is recessive, it doesn't mater if you are looking at a het albino or a homozygous albino, it's still recessive. The red axanthic mutation appears to be a co-dominant mutation type. The phenotype (appearance) of the heterozygous red axanthic is different than the phenotype of the homozygous mutant red axanthic but both are visible mutants.
