Corn snakes or rat snakes are pretty easy and their food and caging needs are fairly easy to accomodate. They also settle down to handling well and don't grow too large. Others perfer small boas. Garters and ribbons while small can be time consuming to feed and clean after and they are highly strung but they were my first snake.

Rosy boas and african house snakes make great first snakes. I do not particularly like the corns or kings as EVERYONE has/had one. Rosies and african house snakes are not as common, yet they are docile, attractive, and hardy captives. It really depends on what you look for in a snake. Andy
