Recommendations for under-cabinet lights

guttersnacks Feb 19, 2005 12:20 AM

I posted a problem in the "Lighting" forum, but I fear since the sub forums dont get visted as much, it'll go unnoticed for a while.
I'll skip repeating myself in this post and just ask if anyone has any recommendations for under cabinet lighting. I install it under the shelves I have my tanks sitting on so it shines down thru the screen tops on the tanks below. Im having bad luck with one particular product (see post in Lighting forum).
Anything along the lines of 15-20 watts halogen fixtures. Minimum space used up for decent amounts of light.
Thanx

Does it have to be halogen? I've been very happy with the ultra low-profile (~1" thick) GE halogen lights that I bought at Home Depot. They have an electronic balast, so no humming and they start instantaneously. Don't remember the exact price. Somewhere between $30 and $40 for a 2-foot fixture, which is more than enough for my 40" wide cages...

Halogen isnt necessary, but my issue is that because the supports for my shelving are 16" apart (I attached the shelving unti right into the studs on the wall) I only have that much space, and not much clearance from the top of the tank to the bottom of the shelf above it. So a flourescent strip takes up too much room, and I dont like the weak pinkish light the dinky units give off.
Maybe I'll shop around for a smaller fixtures than what I thought existed.

If light is all you need and UVB isn't a factor check out the new T5 fluorescent bulbs by Current. I just put them on my tarantula unit and they are awesome.
