BRB puss pocket

nikkillb Feb 19, 2005 08:01 AM

I just received a large female BRB off of the internet. I got her shipped to me. She has huge scar on top of her head from cage rub. Also on inspection, by a very repuatable reptile guy, she has a puss pocket in the back of her mouth/throat. Any suggestions? She has not eaten for me, and is very edgy about her head. How long should she go without eating? She just shed. And the previous owner said she is picky about where/how she eats!!!

nikkillbe,
....A healthy adult BRB can go for 6 months or longer without eating. A puss pocket indicates an infection and an infection can kill a snake in a couple of days. Don't worry too much about getting the snake to eat now. Get the infection cleared up and the husbandry right for awhile and the snake will likely start eating. I have received a few BRBs with scars and wounds and infections. Scars and wounds on the body are not usually a problem. BRBs with scars on the head and mouth have not done well in my care. I think you need a vet to do wound care and cultures on the wound in her throat.

I planned on taking her to a vet and having her looked at on Tuesday. I was just wanting to get some feedback from people that might have already dealt with this issue, just to see what my possibilities were. These are my first snakes that I own, and I really like them and do not want to fail.
