Cockroach Care

miskittlegrl Feb 19, 2005 09:22 AM

Hi everyone. I have definately decided that roaches are the way to go. There are so many more positives than crickets and my parents are about to kill me for the noise and SMELL of the stupid crickets!!! I was wondering if you could give me some good websites that can tell me how to care for them. I want a roach that doesnt climb walls (They will be in plastic rubbermaid containers), dont smell, dont make noise, and dont get too big. If there are websites that tell me how to care for them (other than hissers) that would be awesome. Also if there are any websites that sell these kind of roaches that would be helpful just so I can compare prices of different places. Thanks so much
Meghan

I buy mine from Reptayls, Lobsters and gutload, they are climbers but I just hand feed one at a time. They breed like mad, so If you have many mouths to feed, these are great. I bought my non-climbers from clay at http://www.arbreptiles.com/, discoids..I am trying to get these going for next year. Discoids do not breed as fast, But I am seeeing many babies only after a few months of just letting them sit. I keep my roaches on flexwatt at 90 degrees. On clays website look under feeder roaches, much care info. Reptayls does not have a website, but they advertise here under food/feeders. Progecko has good care sheets.http://www.progeckos.com. Hope this helps....Jean

Give Reptayls a few weeks... I'm attempting to help them build the rest of their site, won't be professional quickly.. but it'll be there and in time will polish itself...

Got lobsters and Discoids from Clay originally.. have hissers from Reptayls.. great species all of them, don't feed hissers.. and discoids are meaty.. heh

Under the Help & Support of my site you will find care documents. If you have any questions you can email me anytime. Roaches are great feeders and you'll be very happy with them. Its true that the lobsters are fast breeders, but they can be a pain to feed off because of the climbing. If your patient go with a non-climber like Blaptica dubia or Blaberus discoidalis and in time you'll never need crickets again.

I started off with Lobsters and they really aren't that bad. Just keep vasaline on the top two inches of the cnclousure. I feed my beardie with thongs,Just drop the roach on a big flat rock and they are gone before reaching the edge of the rock. If you place on their backs they take some time to flip over and usually never make it back to their feet.

I know have discoids that i'm starting a colony can't wait to be able to feed just those to my dragon. I'll end up selling off my lobsters when that time comes.
