enclosure questions

denise1 Feb 19, 2005 11:57 AM

I would like to build an enclosure...I'm having trouble finding info since all care sheets say 55-60 gallon aquarium...first of all, what would be good dimensions for a beardie...I want to make sure he has plenty of room, especially since he's a german giant cross? for those that have built their own, approximately how much did the glass cost? how thick should the glass be? I'm thinking of building the enclosure with a glass front, glass sides but wood (or some such material) back since I would like to mount the lighting inside the tank...I don't like removing lights each time I need access to the cage and neither does Smaug...any additional info would be greatly appreciated...thank you...

My cage is 2x2x4, three sides are plywood and the front is plexiglass. The top is screen.

I believe it cost about 60 dollars for the materials. Real glass is very expensive and heavy, so we went with the plexiglass. I think it is 1/8 inch plexiglass. It still looks nice after 2 years, although I do have a board against the bottom 8 inches to prevent her from scratching the glass. The noise just drives me crazy.

I build my cages. I have built a good sized one at 6ftlong x 2ftwide x 2fttall - I built mine out of wood and screen for good ventilation. If using glass, I would use at LEAST 1/2 inch - 1/4 inch is too thin (Ive tried it). I would back swinging doors that either swing out or down from the front, making the top able to constantly hold the lights. At least put screen on the top!

Good Luck!
