I have always fed in a separate box, but now that I have all my snakes in racks and they are all used to being fed in their tubs I've started doing the same, but they keep getting shreds of aspen in their mouths while they're eating. How do you keep them from ingesting it? And what happens if a piece goes down with the food? I've been pulling pieces out of their mouths and off the rats, but clearly this is a pain for me and the snake.

If your worried of potential ingestion issues you can lay a sheet of paper down and put the feeder on the paper.. (or dangle the feeder, get the strike then place snake and food onto the paper)

I feed all my snakes on it, and alot of them swallow aspen with the prey item, but I have never had a problem with it. People here will tell you it can impact them, but ask for proof & they never reply..LOL. I doubt people would be keeping animals that are thousands of dollars on it if it would threaten their investments lives.

There are substrates that have been documented to cause impaction in snakes, but aspen is not one of them.

I'm a little concerned about the same. I have my Milksnakes on "Carefresh" and I'm thinking to do the same with my Ball Pyhtons. I think "Carefresh" is totally harmless when ingested but it is a little more expensive than Aspen and it dries out more quickly.
