What kind of software and where can I get stuff like this? I've never used Reptile tracking software but I might be interested in checking it out.

I just started using the SnakeKeeper about 3 weeks ago. I like it alot. There's room for just about anything you would want to record. I was wondering if there is a way to correct a typo without erasing and resubmitting all the info about a particular snake. If there is a way around it pleeez tell me.

While you're on the "page" for the animal you want to change the info on, click on EDIT at the top. Select Edit currant record (master). That will unlock the info. Make your change. It will prompt "Would you like to save changes" when you exit the program. Select yes.

I like this tracking program too. Lots of info can be tracked and if I buy or sell to someone using HerpHelper all the info for the animal can be transferred to the new owner's database.

Hi Jay,

I recently purchased a software.. it's interface is not as classy as other softwares.. however, the one thing that made me purchase it was that it had very useful reports. The one single report I was dreaming of having is a single button click that lists out the animals that should be eating today or some date in the future and what they should be eating. So you know what you have to dig out of the freezer and which animals are scheduled to eat in a click of a button. That is an AWESOME feature when you start having a few animals under your belt.. that way you can be sure you're not neglecting any animals, etc... Another feature I really like is to be able to print cage cards right from the application with animal picture, etc. Haven't used this feature yet, but sounds really good. Growth graphs and feeding graphs are also very nice. You can't have enough reports as they are how you can analyze and look at your data.. flipping through the records in the application does not allow you to get the right picture of everything that is going on... all reports should be "filterable" so that you can see all animals, or just particular activities...

My dislikes are few right now... I would like a more "snippy" interface and I also like to have keyboard shortcuts for increased data entry... I also would like to be able to enter feeder items individually with individual weights, and the software adding them up to a total weight eaten by the animal... Would be nice to see reports exported to different formats, etc..

I'm currently using Degei (www.degei.com, previously known as Herp Helper I think)... haven't used it a whole lot yet, but I think it will have been more than worth the small cost for the software. On top of that, Damon is quite responsive to email and is open to suggestions, bug reports, etc. Getting software is more than just getting something to download and use, but support is a big part of selling software now. Damon seems to be doing great in that department as well in my opinion.

Just my opinion...

Bristen.

ps: why are you asking? Planning on writing one? If anybody is planning to write one, they should go open-source so that everybody can add to it! I'd personnally would love to help but I have little time to program at home (too many snakes LOL!), but if it were open source I could perhaps "chip-in" a little bit depending on the schedule...

Thanks for the great input! Yes, I have been considering writing my own app (and I love reports). I have seen a couple but they were obviously done by a hobbyist programmer. I write database applications for multi-million dollar corporations where clients are a bit more, demanding. I have a bit of experience in both fields so I'm thinking I just might be able to create something very useful. But for now, I'm just exploring ideas.

Thanks again for the input!

Breeding snakes is a multi million dollar market and people still have to use the card method to keep records or software that just doesn't get the job done. I have tons of ideas that would make keeping good records easy and make it less of a hassle so people actually use the sofware. My main concern is being able to pull up a page on a specific animal easily and being able to print a report in the morning of what needs to be fed and one at night of what fed. And if a snake doesn't feed that day it will roll over to the next so you make sure all your snakes are getting what they need. I have too many ideas to list because it will be pages long so if you want some good ideas just email me.
