Questions about Spurs

electricbluescat Feb 19, 2005 11:00 PM

My girlfriend has an unsexed adult ball python that we believe is a male. We went to feed him one day and found that one of his spurs was missing. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? Is this normal or could this be a problem?
Thanks,
John and LaShonda

I happen to have a older male with a missing spur as well. When I asked about it, The past owner said that the male was a "Aggressive" breeder and lost one of it's spur due to over use, but he can still breed. I hope this helps.

I would not be too concerned. I have both males and females with short, long, and missing spurs.

have you ever had a female spontaneously loose a spur? I have one that is CBB and has never been bred, but is missing a spur...I am not really sure when it happened, one day I turned her over and noticed it was missing...hmmm....maybe she really really likes the rock in her cage?

I can't say spontaneously since I don't look at spurs that often. Most of my adult snakes I picked up as adults so I can't say when or how anything happened.
