Hard Water Question

bobla Feb 20, 2005 01:34 AM

I am wondering if anyone knows how to remove hard water stains on the tank? Since I got my new tank and filter (Fluval 304) the water seems to be staining the sides of the glass closest to the water flow. I have tried soaking scrub pads in Amquel, and purchased aquarium glass scrubbers, and nothing seems to work! I just got this tank and the stains are really bad. If anyone knows of a way to clean this, please respond.. Thank-You! Laura

The best advice I can give to eliminate the ugly water line is to get a canopy hood and fill the tank all the way up.

Here is my 120 gal with a hood I built.

I have also heard of people cleaning their tank with some mixture (i believe it's 10 to 1) of vinegar and water. The only problem i could see with doing this is that you'd have to completely clean out the tank because i believe the vinegar getting into the water could harm the turtles! but other than that.... those are the only solutions i have heard of! good luck in whatever you choose to do!

HI there. i had the SAME problem for a few years. then one day i tried this stuff called CLR (calcium, lime, rust remover). IT WORKED SOOOO GOOD. poured it on the tough spots that i could never get clean and like MAGIC. all i used to scrub with was a toothbrush. pretty strong stuff. so i would recommend RINSING RINSING RINSING!!

Do not ever use this substance on your tank. It is way too risky to use.

IT COULD KILL YOUR TURTLE IF YOU DO NOT CLEAN AN RINSE IT WELL ENOUGH.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I simply scraped with a razor blade and most of it came off. I also got a special algae scrubber and it is almost gone!! I really appreciate all the replies! Laura

You can just scrape it off with a razor blade.

dsgnGrl is right. The razor is the way to go. I had the same problem. I went to the hardware section of Walmart and bought something called a "tile and glass scraper" which is basically a razor with a handle on it. They had a few to choose from but I got the one that has a 4 inch wide razor blade. It took me less than 5 minutes and very little elbow grease to get the stuff off. My aquarium looks good as new! The scraper only cost me 1.97 and Walmart also sells the replacement blades too. If you don't have a Walmart near I bet you can find the same thing in a hardware store or a home improvement store. Good luck!
