Need Help Iding a Toad Guys and Gals

Doofy1577 Feb 07, 2003 03:40 PM

ok I am given Toads one more shot here. I was at Petsmart and fell in love with these two toads. The label only had one discrpition to them and it was the size they grow to be, 9 inches. Now I have seen adult pics of the Marine, Rococco, and the Colorado River Toad. But in my opinion these look nothing like any of them. I am no expert and am not sure if they CAN look differently from childhood to adulthood so that is why I am on here.

Here are characteristics of them
-They can change colors from Forrect green, tan with green camo markings, to dark brown.
-One of them have white spots on there back
-Short and round snout
-They have no enlarged warts but more of a small wart markings on there back (compared to other toads, like an american toad that I have had in the past)
-I have tried to look but see no signs of a parotoid gland (toxin gland, hope that is the right gland::LOL).

I first thaught that maybe these were Great plains toads but when I saw some pictures they just did not seem to match. I then saw a Fowlers toad which looks alot like them BUt saw no signs of the white spots on there back like one of mine has. SO I saw a baby marine toad and the pic only showed the back of it and I noticed white spots on it. SO I am crossed between a Marine and a Fowlers toad. SO since I am CORNfused, LOL, that is why I came on kingsnake. To ask you all if you know what I have and or any ideas also.

Thanks guys and gals in advance

I'm thinking European Green Toads, I have commonly seen them in PetSmart and PETCo.

Derek this is no european green. I know what those look like and they do not have that bright of green on them. They actually had a label for the European green and the label for these that I baught. The european has a longer snout then these.

Thanks though

Yes that is how my euro toad )bufo bufo( looks. I put a link to my site below, and you can click on the European Toad link to see pics of Euro-Peein', my toad of this species, and compare them to what you got.

Ya I guess that could be them. The thing that confused me was there markings are not nearly as strong, when I say strong I mean bold and outstanding, as I have seen with others. Now if they are Could this be do to them being so young and when getting older there colors will brighten even more???

I looked at your web page give and I do say they do look alike but mine do not have the markings, from what I can see of course, past the neck. It looks that the one on your page has twice as many patterns as mine has on them. I guess I will just see what happens when I see them keep growing past the 6 inche mark:::LOL. That may just give me a clue weather its a european or perhaps a Marine toad after all.

What kind of set up do you have for your europeans Ginevive??? Right now I have a 75watt night light plus an undertank heater on the back side of the glass (its at the top so they will not get burnt from it if they set next to it), with a fluorecent light on top. I was maybe thinking about adding some pothos plants in there so that way they have more camoflage to make them feel protected. I have a fake bonzi tree in there as well and two garden decorative statues which are a turtle and a frog so they can climb on those as well. Bed a Beast as substrate which they seem to love, since after all they staid burrowed for the 1st 3 days and then I fed them so they came up and ate::::LOL. I do not know the temps yet because I have no temp gauge yet in the tank. I will be buying that next week end when payday comes.

Thanks Ginevive in advance if you reply to my post.

I keep my European Toad in a 55 gallon tank with an American toad (I know that sounds odd and I may get flak for it, but they need the same setup and are the same size, so it's all good. Both toads are around 4 inches long.) I got a few inches of bedabeast substrate that they love to burrow in, and my toads also spend alot of time partially buried, but when food is thrown in, they scramble out. I have a small artificial cave in there that they spend 90% of their time in, and a shallow wading bowl that is big enuff for the two of them. Your setup sounds good, I don't heat my tank but that is because the temp in my frog room is about 70-80 degrees year round. Heating is only needed if the room they're in is too cool. Light is good for them during the day but I would put it off at night so they can have some darkness; toads are nocturnal and love the dark. Pothos plants would be great, arranged so the toads can hide among them and in the soil below them. Just make sure you change your water daily to guard against redleg, and keep the tank floor free of "frog crap", and your toads should live a long happy life!

If you have more than 1 toad in a tank, make sure you have multiple hiding spots; they each may want their "own space."

I do ginevive. Actually one stays at one end and the other stays at the other. I am pretty sure I got two of the opposite sex because one had a dark throat and the other did not. I know the throat is not always an indication of sex because the other COULD get the dark throat in breeding season but I atleast know I have one male. I am about to add two more hding spots and they ar the wood huts. I just got to bowl them in some water and let them cool and then I will add them. As in water changing I am doing that. The good thing about the bed a beast you can always tell when one has gone in the water::::::LOL, it gets very dirty after they get done soaking. With my Gulf Coast toads I could not tell since they hardly burrowed and plus I was usen a different bedding which would get compacted in time and would not show if they soaked in the water.

Thanks for the info ginevive
Aaron
