Jeff, just a quick enclosure question

03svtcobra Feb 20, 2005 02:12 PM

jeff, unfortunatley i had sold my brb's. one of wich i regret b/c he was from paul from pmherps. but i'll buy another one.

i recently acquired a dumeril boa and a pastel het for anery boa. i keep reading that people use rubber maid containers instead of aquariums b/c they keep humidity a lot better. my olny thing i dont understand is how to heat them while the lid is on. would heat tape work?

also, do you keep any of your adult snakes in these? i ask that b/c i know some people feed their adult snakes in these containers so i was wondering if they are big enough as a permant housing.

also, what size vision cages do you use to keep your adult snakes in.

sorry for the long post and somewhat of a stupid question.

Steve,
...Heat tape works very well to heat rubbermaid and sterilite boxes. The 3 or 4 inch wide flexwatt is commonly used. Many of the slider racks for holding lots of these boxes have a groove routered (is routed the correct word?)into the shelf with plumbing heat tape in the groove. Most of these tapes, including the flexwatt are too hot when connected to full 110-120 volt household current and have to be controlled with thermostats or rheostat/dimmers. It is important to keep the tapes at one end of the cage so that there is a temperature gradient inside the cage. The largest snakes I keep in these are BRBs that are about 4.5 feet long. The boxes for these snakes are 34 inches long. I keep many of my adult BRBs in Vision cages that are 36x28x18. The 48 inch cages would be better.
