Expanding our family to include a brb

MrsCaptainHook2 Feb 20, 2005 02:27 PM

I am considering adding a brb to our family. My husband has an 11ft burm (go to photo gallery and look up CaptainHook2 under user to see his picture with my daughter)and my daughters share a ball. I love all of them but they are not me. I have been to reptile shows and the brb is just amazing! I am getting ready to graduate from the University of Maryland in May and I think I want to buy myself a graduation present. My question is are temps, humidity, basking, hides, and feeding simular to the burm and balls? My husband custom builds cages with automatic humidity systems and heat controlled by thermostats so obtaining and keep levels are not a problem. Is there good book anyone could recommend for the basic needs of the brb? I would like to do as much research now before I start looking in May.

Thanks,

Susan

Susan,
....BRBs require temperatures at least 10 degrees cooler and humidity at much higher levels than Balls and Burms. There are lots of posts here on this forum which will give you ideas on how to keep BRBs. BRBs are about as secretive as Ball Pythons and will spend daylight hours hiding. They do best with under the floor heating and do not like lights. When kept in the right type habitat they eat as aggressively as Burms. Have a look at my website for more info about Rainbow Boas.

..but I think the BRB temperment will be very different to what you are accustomed to. Not a bad idea to research that a bit too.
