Visited some sugarcane fields of FL Sat. and found most of the "flippin'" sites I checked had been very recently visited. I then resigned myself to walking around the various ditches and canals that are there in hopes of seeing some snakes out and about.
We came across a pile of rocks that surely holds kings.
Next to it was a small stand of trees and of course a ditch along the road.
Looking down at my feet for a place to step (you have to be aware there are gators around),
I saw only a glimpse of a tail moving quickly beneath me.
I grabbed this little guy and took his pic in a more stable spot.
Obviously last year's baby.
We saw no adults, but did see a few racers.
Moving on we saw some of our competition at another site.
Looking closer, at least it wasn't a king! but a nerodia.
They surely take a hit from a lot of the predators down there.
