Venomous snake photo project

BlairBunting Feb 20, 2005 09:48 PM

I have started a project in the last month now photographing venomous species in a studio like setting to get a new look. I wanted to take shots that really bring out the colors that exist in many of these incredible creatures. So far I have shot many rattlers, however, I would like to shoot different species such as Gaboons, Rhinos, and varies elapids. Unfortunately I am in AZ and the laws are quite strict. I will be on location in Chicago this summer for a catalog shoot, but if anyone is near to either AZ or Illinois and has time to have their snakes photographed, please email me. Here are links to some of the shots so far so that you can see that I know what I'm doing

Illinois Laws are about as bad as they come in reguards to venomous snakes. Chicago pretty much has the strong hold on the state. But you may want to contact Mr. Rob Carmichael as he has one of the hottest collections in the country and for sure the midwest. I would love to see a nice Lachesis photo.

Fantastic pictures Blair, here and in you portfolio.

Exotics are illegal in AZ too, although I know some people have them. They only come forward, then reluctantly, when bitten and need medical care. I know of someone when bitten by his Puff Adder refused to tell the doctor what snake he was bitten by. Puff Bites resemble C. atrox bites superficially he only told them when they were going to give him the wrong Antivenom. He was fined and his large collection was subsquently confiscated.

I'm not sure if any institution will allow their snakes out for a photo op...if an accident occurs the chance of litagation is just too great. Also, the stress that the animals will recieve from the session will be very detrimental to their health. Gabbies & Rhinos thrive when not disturbed and mostly left alone.

Good Luck,

Al

Man that is a bummer of a situation. As for the location, it doesn't have to be in AZ. I was more or less hoping for anywhere near this part of the US. If anyone is interested please email me at blair@blairbunting.com

Blair:

Didn't want to rain on your parade but it's the reality of the situation. I hope you get to hook up with a private keeper that will work with you. I would love to see the finished work.

Good Luck,

Al
