I went out today about 2:30 p.m. and traveled one of my favorite haunts, FM624 Corpus Christi to Orange Grove and beyond. It was partly cloudy to sunny and very humid. Normally with conditions such as these I will see several species of herps. I had a pretty good feeling about today but alas it is still a tad early. I saw nothing untill I passed US281. I stopped at a piece of plywood I know about, where I have seen scorpions, black widows and a tarantula. Anyway, I lifted the plywood to find a large bullsnake with 6 or 7" of it's head and neck poking out of a gopher tunnel. Imagine squatting down ready for arachnids and getting SSSSSSSSSed at from about a foot and a half away! Man, what a rush! I was so startled that i dropped my little camera phone and could only watch as the wiley bull laughed and backed his way down the tunnel! Halfheartedly I began digging up the tunnel, only to concede defeat when it branched off before a turnaround. Maybe tonight will be better!!!
