carpondro inquiries

groundskeeper24 Feb 20, 2005 10:36 PM

I've read a little about carpondros on the internet (basically everything I could google.). They are fascinating. I don't think I'd want to buy one, but was wondering what it entailed to produce them. Does the cross only work with the sorong chondros? What type of morelia works best? I've kept jungle carpets and queensland carpets, and both were great snakes. Just curious how this works. I'm assuming it's not easy, or else everyone would be doing it. Is it hard to encourage breeding between the two species?

personally i think they are unappealing... i think the green tree python is perfect in every aspect and it should not be cross bread with a snake that is not even in its league...

Yasser Feb 23, 2005 10:35 AM

He didn't ask for you opinion...he asked for some facts.

But this cross is being attempted by many folks, including well known chondro breeders.
It has been accomplished with both the moth or father being the GTP and with various carpets including West Papuans, Jungles, Coastals, and even Diamond crosses.
SO far the best IMO truned out to be the West Papuan crosses...but of course I am a little biased as I own one! (pictured)

I hope I helped.

First of all, How dare you Shhawke? calling an species of snake "below" another? Is't every animal great in it's own way? I mean (sorry for using a old phrase) if you don't have any thing positive to say than don't say anything at all.

Anyway, The current "top" breeder attempting this cross ,and has not Disappeared, is Brandon Osborne. I suggest asking him for tips on breeding and the "Introduction" of the two. I hope this helps. Much luck.

Top Breeder? lol. I had to laugh at that...sorry. I'm just a guy that loves the snakes I keep. Anyway.....back to the topic.

I think people are assuming there's more to this breeding than there actually is. The only thing I've done is put the pairs together and they did the work on their own. They're copulating right now for the 5th time that I've witnessed. The first couple of nights were nothing more than a tail wrap, but I've witnessed hemipenal insertion five times to this point and they are locked up as I type this at 10:30 a.m. I'm sure the work isn't done yet. I ASSUME that getting them to breed is relatively effortless. It's getting eggs and getting them to hatch that is the concern. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

HOW DARE ME??? GUY THIS IS A FORUM... A PLACE WHERE YOU CAN GIVE YOUR OPINION... THAT WAS MY OPINION... I HAVE DONE MY RESEARCH... AND I HAVE MY OPINIONS... I JUST DONT SEE THAT ALL SNAKES ARE EQUIL... I HAVE SEEN SOME NICE LOOKING CARPET PYTHONS WITH HIGH YELLOW... BUT IN MU OPINION I DONT THINK A GREEN TREE PYTHON WOULD BENIFIT BY BEING CROSS BREAD WITH A CARPET........ ALL THE PICS I HAVE SEEN OR CARPONDROS LOOK LIKE CARPET PYTHONS...
I HAVE LOTS OR RESPECT FOR BRIAN OSBORNE, SO IF HE IS DOING IT THEM MAYBE THEIR IS MORE TO THIS THEN MEETS THE EYE.....

BUT AGAIN..... IN MY OPINION... I HAVE NOT BEEN INPRESSED WITH THE RESULTS I HAVE SEEN SO FAR... AND I ALSO HOLD THE GREEN TREE PYTHONS A GOOD ARMS LENGTH ABOVE ANY CARPET PYTHIN...

I AM AN ANIMAL LOVER... I HAVE HAD MORE ANIMALS THEN MOST PEOPLE HAVE IN A LIFE TIME... BUT THEIR ARE BETTER BREEDS IN EVERY SPECIES AND I HAPPEN TO THINK THE GREEN TREE PYTHON IS THE CREAM OF THE CROP...

GabrielG_Pro Feb 23, 2005 03:47 PM

Like Yasser said, Groundskeeper24 did't ask for your feelings about carpondros. Groundskeeper24 asked for infomation on them. Not whether carpondros were "unappealing" or not. Also, while you may think green tree pythons are "The cream of the crop," others may not think that way and and they don't need someone giving them grief about it.

oh, about that part about " I DONT THINK A GREEN TREE PYTHON WOULD BENIFIT BY BEING CROSS BREAD WITH A CARPET", well I found something that may help.while the average green tree python may have only 15-20 eggs, carpet pythons in the other hand can have as many as 10 to 40 eggs. With proper breeding, an "uber" green tree python can be bred to produce as many as 15-40 eggs. A big improvement.

And for my two cents , using lower case letters is not a virtue. I mean I'm not afraid of you "yelling" at me on a forum. As well as, at least use real words when firing an comeback. I mean like; "EQUIL", "MU", "CROSS BREAD", and "PYTHIN". Some gammer would be nice too, "I HAVE LOTS OR RESPECT FOR BRIAN OSBORNE".

In all, I did't mean to sound mean. I just thought your comments were out of line.

HE ASKED A QUESTION AND I GAVE MY OPINION... I WAS EXPECTING A REPLY LIKE THIS, HOWEVER I WAS HOPING FOR SOMEMORE INTRESTING INFO... MAYBE SOMETHING THAT WOUDL CHANCE MY MIND... AS I SAID IF BRIAN IS DOING IT THEN MAYBE THEIR IS MORE TO THIS THEN MEETS THE EYE...

AND AS FOR THE CAPS... I'M AT WORK AND EVERYTHING I DO IS IN CAPS... SO DEAL WITH IT...

AND WHATS UP WITH CRYING ABOUT MY GRAMMER??? ARE YOU A ENGLISH TEACHER TOO??? IF I KNEW WE WERE TRYING TO IMPRESS EVERYONE IN HERE BY USING PERFECT SPELLING MAYBE I WOULD HAVE TRIED A LITTLE HARDER...

AND ALSO SAYING THAT I WAS OUT OF LINE... I DIENT MEAN ANY DISRESPECT... I WAS JUST STATING MY OPINION... AGAIN THIS IS A FORUM... FOR ALL OF YOU NON ENGLISH TEACHERS OUT THEIR... THE DEFFINITION FOR THE WORD FORUM IS... a public meeting place for open discussion... AND THIS IS AN OPEN DISCUSSION...

I DONT MIND YOU GIVING ME YOUR OPINION... TO ME HONEST I AM A LITTLE IMPRESSED THAT THE EGG LAYING ABILITY WOULD HAVE SUCH AN INCREASE... BUT ALL THE SAME... I HAVE YET TO SEE A PIC OF ONE THAT DOESENT LOOK JUST LIKE A CARPET PYTHON...
I ALSO UNDERSTAND THAT IT WILL TAKE SOME TIME TO GET THE RIGHT LOOK... BUT THEIR ARE LOTS OF PEOPLE WORKING ON THIS AND I HAVENT SEEN ANY RESULTS THAT WERE HEAD TURNING...

I'M NOT AFRAID OF ADMITTING I'M WRONG BUT I'M NOT CONVINCED YET..

SO FOR ANYONE OUT THEIR THAT HAS A GOOD PIC OF A CARPONDRO... SEND IT AND WE CAN SEE...

GabrielG_Pro Feb 24, 2005 10:44 AM

I'm putting an end to this. If you want to be mean to anybody who disagrees with you, so be it.

oh, and I'm not a teacher. I'm just somebody who likes to use proper english. Also, nobody was "crying " for your "gammer".

This thread is such a waste of my time and others time. I am not going to reply to this line any more. Sorry to Groundskeeper for having to hear such dung. My apologies.

i was just stating my opinion.....

thats what everyone is doing in here... their are several different opinions on how to do everything... their is not any specific way of breeding a snake or incubating eggs... they are all opinions or a way someone has done it...

he stated his opinion that they were fasinating... i stated mine that i dident think so... i did not mean any thing bad twords groundskeeper...

the problem with most reptile handlers and breeders is that they only think things should be done a certin way...

i have read the complete chrono book and it is vary one sided... now i understand that is has really great advise in it but on the other hand i know people like Brian Osborne that do things different and had the same success...

the point i am trying to make here is that i was not trying to offend anyone... i was stating my opinion... i dont care if he asked for my opinion... if i was trying to be rude to him i would have told him he was wrong in his thinking... but if you go back and review... you will notice i started the sentence with "in my opinion"

if i;m wrong then i'm wrong... but i dont think the cross will work out as well as everyone is hoping...

again if anyone out their has pics of carpondros please post them... i'm intrested to see if their has been any succesfull results... and again succesfull are also a matter of opinion...

well now you have my opinion on things... ENJOY

blondmix Feb 25, 2005 11:38 PM

Hey guys.... Let's get to what's TRULY important here..... It's BRANDON Osborne, not Brian. Thank you.

Drosera Feb 26, 2005 03:31 AM

This thread has actually been quite entertaining...
Thanks for taking the all caps off. Hurts the eyes. If you want a nice pic of the mix, check out Yasser's critter earlier in on the thread.
And it is very possible to disagree with breeding results without ticking off half the forum and the lurkers.
You, for example could state regret that the GTP doesn't have that much color influence, or that the pure essence of the animal is lost in translation or just state general wariness about hybrids.
But elevating one Morelia species to sainthood and reducing another lovely animal in the same family to a mud worm, (I know you did not say that, but it's how your first post came off) is an absolutely perfect way to piss off everyone in here. Many enthusiasts love them both.
And now for some non-diplomatic typing advice. You said in a recent post that you were typing in all caps because that's how things were at work. Well, your first post was lower case. If you use something as a cantankerous excuse, make sure it's consistent.
Second, no, there aren't any english teachers here that I know of. But that doesn't really matter. When meeting someone face to face, to present a good impression you groom well, wash up, wear something nice and smile. And here, you type properly.
Yes, you have every right to state your opinion. But for an example, I'd be an idiot to walk into the Republican convention and shout BUSH SUCKS!!! Sure, I'd just be stating my opinion in the land of the free, but somehow I suspect it wouldn't go over very well. Same thing applies here. Fortunately the topic is gorgeous animals and not politics, so even with squabbles like this one, it's far more civil.

not that i want this to continue any further but in my diffence... i was at home when i wrote the messages not in caps as i am now...
also i do appolagise to BRANDON for saying his name wrong...

lol... but i still dont see the point in your speach about typing perfect... we are here to listen to other peoples opinion... i could care less if someone miss-spells a word... the point i was trying to make is... i doubt that you would not listen to someones advise because they misspelled a few words... i have got better things to do then sit here proof reading my messages...

i do see your point in using tact though... my bad... i still dont like the idea though... i'll keep my mouth shut in the matter from now on...

but i am still intrested in seeing pics of the offspring...

and i saw the 2 pics posted...

i'm just here to state my ideas and opinions...

Oh! Didn't realize.

Good point I guess, so long as the advice is good and they don't "tiipe liek diss". Gahhh! typing that butchered phrase made me twitch! Darn English classes... Ruined me for life. Hackerspeak is my Kryptonite.

>>i do see your point in using tact though... my bad... i still dont like the idea though... i'll keep my mouth shut in the matter from now on...

Thanks. I'm sure expressing dissent is safe, but Morelia rock in general. I'll try to chew on something instead of tossing out huge lectures late in thread.

>>i'm just here to state my ideas and opinions...

As am I. By the way, congrads on your new aqquisitions from Europe. Regarding the eight foot female, I don't know if she'd be a good financial investment, and I sort of doubt it. But as long as she's healthy, she may be worth it just for the unusual and cool factor.

THANKS... I AM VARY EXCITED... I AM STILL HOPING TO GET 50 BEFORE THE END OF THE TRIP... BUT IT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE WE WILL MAKE IT... ALL THE SAME I'M SURE THAT I WILL HAVE ALOT OF BEAUTIFUL SNAKES...
WOULD U BUY HER IF YOU HAD THE MONEY???

Drosera Mar 03, 2005 02:04 PM

>>WOULD U BUY HER IF YOU HAD THE MONEY???

Shoot, that's a hard question... I must confess that if I stumbled across $1200, I'd probably spend it on something a wee bit more boring and practical. (new tires and a baby aru with setup?)

But you on the other hand are trying for 50 snakes at once and are clearly very involved in GTPs, so here's my thoughts depending on what she turns out to be. It seems like a gamble, but one that could pay off.

1. If she turns out to be an overweight old lady snake with her best breeding days behind her, you may get a few babies but she'd basically be a twelve hundred dollar curiosity and pet. Which may be worth it to you but maybe not.

2. If, however she's relatively young and active, and comes by her size very honestly, you might have stumbled onto the start of an awesome breeding project. especially if you can find a relatively large male or two from the same/similar locality. Freakin big green tree pythons! It's still a gamble, but the thought boggles the mind.

WELL MY REACTION IS SIMALER TO YOURS... I AM TRYING TO GET 50, BUT I AM ALSO NOT WANTING TO THROW MY MONEY AWAY ON SOMETHING THAT WONT BE WORTH THE EFFORT...

I ALSO HAD THE IDEA TO TRY TO GET OTHER SNAKES OF THE SAME SIZE BUT THEY JUST DONT EXIST... THAT WAS THE FIRST THING I SAID TO MY GF... TO ASK AROUND ABOUT OTHER BIG SNAKES... THIS SNAKE HAS CHANGED HANDS SO MANY TIMES THAT IS NO EVEN FUNNY... HE DOES SAY SHE WAS BORN IN NORWAY THOUGH...

AND AS FAR AS BEING INVOLVED WITH GTP'S......... I AN STILL NEW AT THE GTP SIZE OF THE GAME... I HAVE HAD EXOTIC ANIMALS MY WHOLE LIFE... WHEN I WAS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL I WAS BREEDING VAILED AND JACKSON CHEMELEONS... AND IF I LISTED ALL THE EXOTICS I HAVE HAD YOU WOULD NEVER GET THROUGH THE LIST... MY FIRST PET WAS A SCREECH OWL... I WAS ABOUT 7...

I AM A HUGE ANIMAL LOVER... I AM IN THE PROCESS OF WRITING A BOOK RIGHT NOW THAT WILL WITH ANY LUCK BLOW THE COMPLETE CHRONO BOOK OUT OF THE WATER... IN THAT BOOK IT IS VARY ONE SIDED... BUT THEIR ARE SEVERAL WAYS TO DO EVERYTHING AND IN MY BOOK I PLAN ON GETTING ALL OR MOST OF THE WAYS TO DO THINGS DOWN...

THEIR ARE EXPENSIVE WAYS AND CHEAP WAYS TO DO THINGS... IF SOMEONE WANTS A GTP THEY ARE GOING TO GET ONE... BUT WHAT I HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH IS PROVIDING THEM AND ANYONE ELSE WAYS TO DO THINGS THAT WILL ENSURE A HEALTHY SNAKE...

I RECIEVED ME CAGES YESTERDAY FROM CAGES AND DESIGN AND I HAVE BUILT A FEW MYSELF... SO ITS GOING TO TAKE ME A WHILE TO GET THIS ALL SET UP... THE PROJECT IS TAKING UP ALL THREE BEDROOMS IN MY UPSTAIRS... BUT ONCE I GET IT ALL THE WAY I WANT IT I WILL BE SURE TO POST PICS ON HERE ALL THE TIME...

BUT BACK TO THE ORIGINAL COMMENT... I DONT THINK I WILL BE GETTING THIS FEMALE... I AM STILL NOT SURE... I AM SO TEMPTED TO GET HER... BUT I REALLY CANT JUSTIFY IT IN MY HEAD... IT MIGHT CHANGE THINGS IF I KNEW HOW OLD SHE WAS...

MAYBE I'LL SAVE THE MONEY AND BUY A FEW CARPONDRO'S... LOL

I only have one thing to say about all this. I have a pretty short attention span so bear with.....
