Wild caught, locale, corn pics . . .

BlueKing Feb 21, 2005 02:21 PM

I found 5 cornsnakes (three in one evening) in one week last year. (That was the only week that I went field herping in my county in 04'). Here's a pic of a wild caught 3 foot male corn that I found in Cumberland county, NC. last fall. He was the reddest of all of them and resembled my okeetees. Enjoy . . .

Here's the second one: A 4.5 foot male that just ate a medium rat! (found within a half mile of the first one).

Here's the third: A close-to four foot female found near my house (only half a mile away).

Here's # 4. A young (probably a 03') male exhibiting nice orange tones. Also found within a quarter of a mile of the other two and only about a 100 yards of the golden one.

# 5: A young (another 03' I think) female that I witnessed getting hit in head & neck by a passing PU-truck. I picked her up and was going to feed her to my kingsnakes, knowing that she would die in a few minutes. But after a few hours and a little bit of bleeding she came around and still lives to this day! A miracle! Her pupil has dissapeared in one of her eyes, otherwise she's in great health and eats good! This one is the only one exhibiting a lot of gray background color. It was also found about a hundred yards from the golden cornsnake.
I hope you like the pics - sorry about the poor quality, just thought you might enjoy seeing what corns look like in different areas (I know I do)! AND yes they ARE ALL locale specific (All found by me).

All very nice snakes! I find it most interesting to see how much variation there is between the same species all found basically in the same area.

My question is, what reaction do most of the corns that you catch in the wild have? Are they aggressive, and how many bite, musk, etc?

Hi there Matt!
Most of the corns I catch around here are a little nippy at first, but settle down within hours. After that, they all have been pretty docile animals and easy to pick up. The golden one for example, bit me three times the first day I picked her up. But from the very next day on she has never bit me again and is my best feeding corn snake out of all the ones I have and has never refused a meal!
